Electronic Mail, or email, is the most used function of the Internet. It isn’t hard to understand why. Email replaces the paper postal service with a means of sending the same information to people but at far greater speed. A one page letter may take as long as a month to go from PEI to New Zealand by normal postal service, while the same message sent by email would arrive in the person’s mailbox in less than an hour.

I don’t really need to go into detail about PINE and sending and receiving email here at UPEI. The program is very basic and easy to use. However, there are a few functions that are typically unused. One is the facility for a signature file. A signature file is a little (usually about four lines) addition to each message that is quite literally your signature. It can include anything from just your name to a picture made up of whatever is available on your keyboard. Personal disclaimers and poetry are popular for some reason.

Another underused function is the ability to change your name. My email address, for example, is jdavis. But, instead of saying the

message is from ‘‘Jonathan Davis’’, the message reports it is from *‘Akallabeth, the Arch-Lich’’.

A third underused function is the mail filtering capability. This is a function under the preferences menu that will automate certain functions when certain criteria you specify are filled. Say you just got dumped, and you don’t

want to hear from your ex. The filter can be told to delete any of your ex’s email without you ever) knowing it was there.

Finally, you are able to forward your email to another account. I have an account at UPEI, and one on PEInet. Rather than worry about keeping up with both, I tell my UPEI account to send all of my mail to PEInet, were I read and reply to it. This keeps my email world a lot less confusing.

When email was made available to all students of UPEI, it became widely used as a toy and not the educational resource it was intended to be. People sent ‘‘chain mail’’, ‘‘mail bombs’’, and would email a message saying ‘*Hi!’’ to their friend sitting right beside them. This abuse of the network was creating a problem by tying up terminals and slowing dow overall network operation.

To discourage such usage of the email facilities, the UPEI student network has set up a time delay on the delivery of all messages. This prevents any email you send from being deliv- ered until a certain amount of time has passed. Also, networks always keep logs of all activities- This allows the system administrator to confirm any complaints of misuse, and remove access permissions for the offender.

Some of you may remember that we reviewed this restaurant last year. Why review it again, you ask? Well, read on.

Everything Kool is a little spot in the Ellen’s Creek Plaza, convenienly located next to the Diet Centre. They sell ice cream treats and hot foods. Take-out is available, and they have lots of seats inside if you decide to eat in.

This restaurant has many good qualities. Most importantly, the food is yummy. The hamburgers are real meat, unlike usual fast food, and they have little perks like homemade mayonaise. Colleen says their Supermix ice cream is the best ice cream on Earth. One thing I particularly

like is that the soft ice cream is available in ©

a variety of wild and wonderful flavours, like Pina Colada. This ice cream innovation is due to a neat-o gadget called ‘‘Flavour Burst.’’

One thing that keeps me coming back to Everything Kool is their appreciation for

students. In addition to the daily special there are regular student specials. The st are all very friendly to us starving studen types.

However, there are a few negative aspects as well. One thing is that portion sizes have shrunk somewhat. The sizes still plenty to fill you, but they were hug last year. My only other complaint is th prices have increased. The difference is much, just a quarter or fifty cents here ar there. The meals are still a good deal, so not let that complaint deter you. Most specials are under $4.50 including your p which is a better deal than you are likely find anywhere else.

Some of the good things to try are fries with the works, the cheeseburger, crosstrack fries, and the Iceburg. We recommend that they add pizza fingers tg the menu, because they are so yummy e if they are hideously greasy.

Everything Kool gets four cookie: out of a possible five.

THE RES RAP

by Yvonne MacKean WELL, TWO FOR TWO, I guess I am off -to a pretty good start. This week’s column is just your basic update on what’s happening...here goes. First, there was a no-talent show for the residences. All of the brightest untalented stars were there. There were some talented perform- ances, which helped ease the pain of the others. Spectacles included the slaughtering of popular songs, a few skits and a comedic routine by a not- so-funny RA. Laughter was the ultimate result. Congratulations to the winners Nancy Buckle and Amanda Smith. These two, as grannies, preformed a stirring rendition of the alphabet song -- by burping! You definitely had to see it to believe it! Next, a thank you goes out to Marc Braithwaite, Ralph Robinson, the RAs and the ‘House committee members who were involved in the assembling the care packages for all the res students. The packs included essentials (laundry soap, toothpaste, mouthwash) and some treats. It was a very neat idea and all students really appreciated them. Those little phone directories

that ring are cool.

Third, the Marian guys are going on their bonding trip. Saturday, (okay so it is bit out of date), the guys are going deep sea fishing. For their sake we hope it is not too windy. Hopefully, we won’t be bored by all their tall tales. On a related note, there was a whale-watching expedi- tion for res students. Many seals were spotted but unfortunately, no whales. The gang is hoping a return engagement will really be a whale-watching experience.

The House Committees in each building are close to being established. Once completed, they will be able to organize House events. Already, in Bernardine, there are floor parties being organized and sports activities being encouraged. It is rumoured that Marian is planning a Grey Cup party. Best of luck to the committees in their endeavors.
