The Government people may say that if the schools be reduced in nuinber it cannot be owing to the reduction of salaries, because the salaries remain at the Same amount as before—the only alteration is, that the inhabitants of a school district are required to make up # certain pro- portion of the teacher's salary, and the Govern- ment provides the rest. Thie fallacy, we re- wember, was put forth by ths Militia Colonel at the head of the Government, in one of his fal- lacivus speeches in the House of Assembly, on the 8th of April last. It was on that day the Hoo Joun Longworth introduced the Education Bill, as a Government measure; and he explained, that amongst its leading principles was the re _|duction of salaries, amounting to £15 in each ease—which would be ove third in a majority ot the salaries, and nearly one third in the others. The Hons. Messrs. Coles and Warburton warmly opposed the measure on the ground of this very reduction; and when Col. Gray rose to reply to them be made the following very disingenuous statement :—
