A high Chinese official, Huang Mao-t’sai, has published four volumes, giving an ac- count of his recent travels in British India. He says that the natives are thoroughly con- tented with the government of their foreign conquerors for the reason that they regard it as much more human~ than that of their native rulers, but he thinks that the legisla- tion of the English is not in favor of the poor, because begging is forbidden in the streets of Calcutta,
The Secretary of Tuke’s emigration fund has issued an appeal for aid to enable the dis- tresseld people of Ireland io emigrate to Canada and the United States. He says so well are the emigrants already sent ont pros- pering, that some “of them have begun to send home money to assist their relations to emigrate, and thus a beginning has been made in the poorest districts in the west tawards starting a natural flow of emigration, The districts already entrusted to the Com- mittee contain a population of over 30,000.
A despatch from Rangoon says in con- sequence of the recent escape of the eldest son of the late King of Burmah from Ben- ares, who is supposed to have gone to Upper Burmalh to raise a rebellion, 3,000 Burmese troops have been despatched to Manipor frontier and 3,000 from the Shan State to the Toungoo frontier. The stations on the Irriwaddy River are carefully guarded and war steamersare in readiness to convey troops.
A few days ago a reporter of the Moncton Transcript, called into Dr. W. T, Erith’s drug store, Portland, N. B.. where the genial proprietor had on exhibition six tape worms preserved ia spirits. They were expelled by treatment of the following: One, found to measure 27 f-et long, had troubled Mr, Alex. Rankine, biscuit maker, St. John, another, of the length of 30 feet, had worried Mr. Thomas Rankine, of St. John; still another, which measured 48 feet, had impaired the youthful vigor of Wm. Hamnlton, of Paradise Row, st John, and still another had for some months inhabited the intestinal canal of Mr Wm. Linnehan, butcher. All these cases have been successfully treated during the past three months, Mr, Thomas Rankine referred to was under treatment in Ceylon, but the physi- cians there gave up hope of effecting a cure, and he came to St. John to die, but had the good fxrtune to call upon Dr. Erith, te whom he is indebted tor a new lease of life, so to speak, at least so says our informant.

Christmas cards, all of the same size, are pasted on each side of them lengthways, and the sides are then united with a little “hinge” made of ribbon. They are then folded back wards and forwards 80 as to
