Seek Blight Resistance

Potato growers are interested in a variety of potatoes combining resistance to late bllglll. and with desirable horticultural characteristics. Late blight is a serious disease of the paid". common lib almost all sections of Eastern Can- ada, and now controlled only by means of ex- pensive spray programs. The spray or ilusl method of control, in addition to being costly, is only partially effective in epidemic years, when yields are reduced and losses in storage from late blight rot may be heavy in potatoes from fields that havo not been thoroughly spray- ed. The ultimate solution is the introduction of a variety of potato that is highly resistant or immune to the disease.

ln this connecion we quote from a bulletin recently issued by the Federal Department ul Agriculture:

Unfortunately, no such variety is available ot' the present time. A variety of this kind is particularly needed in the coastal regions of the Maritime Provinces and in certain areas of the prbvince of Quebec- where acreages are small, where little if any spraying is done and where the tops of potatoes are frequently killed in late sum- mer, resulting in a partial crop failure. The old v‘ariety President masquerading under the names of Paisley Forty-fold, Non-blight and Never-Rot is grown to a limited extent in regions where blight is unusually severe, and little, if any spray- ing is done. This variety has some resistance to blight but is very late in season, low in yield and poor in quality under tho conditions grown. Thc newer variety Sebago, an introduction by the United States Department of Agriculture, is a much superior variety from a horticultural stand- point. it too has some resistance to late blight but the resistance appears to fluctuate from year tayear. In some seasons, it possesses consid- erable resistance, whereas in others rather heavy losses are experineced.

All this lends added significance to thc potato-breeding program being conducted at the Dominion Experimental Station, Fredericton, N. B., says L. C. Young, in which the production of a blight resistant potato is one of the main objectives. Starting off with a wild potato from Mexico, tho workers at this Station, after many years of effort- have succeeded in developing several new varieties of potatoes which appear to be very promising. These varieties are satis- factory from the standpoint of yield, type and quality arid'in addition, have proved to be re- sistant to,blight wherever grown.

During the past season, seedlings produced in this program were tested in every province of Canada. Thesa tests will be extended and the blight resistance of these seedlings will be checked under as wide a range of conditions as possible. It is hoped that the results of these trials will warrant the introduction of one or more varieties to growers for trial purposes in the course of the next two or three years.

There are excellent opportun- ltlos for non-dollar countries ln the Canadian market, oayo the current Monthly Review of the Bank of Nova Boosts. The temp- orary import restrictions, designed to cur. U. s. dollar outlays because of the critical foreign exchange position, fortify the Canadian de- mand for overseas products. Though the United States will obviously remain her major supplier, Can- ada's interests lie in expanding her purchases from non-dollar countries, since there ls no prob- lem of payment and since such a development would help to sustain their purchases of Canadian goods

Last year. the Review points out, Canada, with imports valued a‘. over $2,500 million, was fourth among the worlds importers, be- lng exceeded only by t-he United Kingdom with $7.000 millions. the United States with over $6.500 millions and France with nearly $3.000 millions. Her imports were varied, including fuels, industrial raw materials and parts, many types of industrial machinery and equipment, and a wldie range o! consumers‘ goods. The Conrad/tau market ls thus e. substantial one. and fully justifies thorough at- tention to sales and service-a. fact that. has long been realized by many American suppliers. In on uncertain world. the Canadian market. ls as stable as most others, though it ls. of course, subject to variations, depending largely on external conditions. It should further be emphasized, says the Review, that. Canada is a growing country. and that there are few markets in the world that offer better long-range prospects. More- over. Canadian actions regarding tariffs and trading policy have, for more than n. decade, demons- trated Canada's desire to reduce trade barriers and to work to- wards e. freer and multilateral sys- tem pf international trade.

In view of the International Trade Fair to be held ln Toronto from May 3i to June l2, this issue of the Review ls devoted to is survey of Canada! position as a trading nation. It describes broadly the nature of her exports as well as the significance of the Canadian market to other coun- tries.

Noting that. Canada occupies an outstanding position as an ex- porter of primary products, the Review goes on to say that. the proportion of such products now exported ln processed form Ls very large. By far the larger part. of forest-product exports has been processed by Canadian sawmills and pulp and paper mills and goes out. ln the form of sewn lum- ber, wood-pulp or newsprint, arm the bulk of base metal exports consists of refined or fabricated metals rasher than ores or concen- trates. Attention ls also drawn $0 the fact that. ln addition to these products of her natural resources, a significant portion of Canada's exports now consists of manufac- tured articles. Between I089 and 1041, whereas total exports in- creased ln, value about two and one half times, exports of manufac- tured goods increased four-fold.
