ed to the new Pavilion at the Charlottetown Hospital, which is to be formally opened to- day. This is an important event to all con- cerned in the institution, and indeed to our citizens generally. The splendid accommo- dation now being provided was the result of long and careful planning, and represents the most modern design in building and equipment. It should prove an asset of great benefit to the community.

At the present time a new Prince County Hospital is under construction, and exten- sive additions are being made to the ‘Prince Edward Island Hospital. The past few years have seen new hospitals opened at Montague, Souris and Alberton, new nurses’ homes erected at the Prince Edward Is- land Hospital and Falconwood Hospital, and expansion and improvement in hospital fa- cilities in other directions. Yet the demand is still in excess of supply. More and more people are taking advantage of hospitaliza- tion for ailments which formerly were treat- ed at home, and the benefits thus derived, coupled with the need for providing more facilities for nurses’ training, are regarded as of national as well as local importance. Hence the provisions made under the Fed- eral health grants, supported by the Pro- vincial Department of Health and Welfare, for encouragement of these activities.

Prince Edward Island has moved into the van of progress in its public health pro- gramme, and the latest evidence of this achievement——the new Charlottetown Hos- pital Pavilion—-is something in which all our people may take justifiable pride.

Sir,—It will be greatly appreci- ated, if your paper would permit us to answer a few questions of- ten asked by the public. These questions concern the number of days necessary in insurable em- ployment. to qualify for the re- ceipt of benefit.

Q. How many days must I have in insurable employment before I can qualify for Unemployment In- surance Benefits’!

A. To qualify for benefits, In applicant must have 180 days in insurable employment in the two years dating back from the day on which the claim is filed. A man who filed his claim on Febru- ary Isl, 1950. must have worked in insurable employment at least 180 days between February I, 1948 and February 1. I950. The 180 qualifying condition is to pro- iect the more or less steady work- er, and to distinguish him from the man who is less industrious, and therefore, contributes very little to the Unemployment Insur- ance Fund. When I man estab- lishes that he has worked 180 days within two years. all his con- tributions for the past five years will be taken into account, and he will be allowed one day’: benefit for every five days he has spent in insurable employ- ment.

Everything of course depends on first proving the 180 day con- dition. If the claim is approved. a_ “Benefit Year" is set up for the

A. He must prove that since the date he filed his original claim. he has worked I further 60 days in insurable employment) and that he still has to his credit not less than 180 daily contri- butions in the two years dating back from the date on which he makes his second claim.
