“Going Home.”

There isn’t a day in the year but what one can see just such a parting as recently took place at a city terminus,

Man and wite had come down to the train which was to bear her to her mo- ther’s. The husband had fully per- auaded her that her health was failing, and that she ought to go home on a six week's visit.

She thought she felt even better than usual, but husbands know best about these things of course.

This wife seemed to have made her preparations quickly, and had not yet said what was on her mind.

It lacked thirty-five minutes of train. time, and as they sat down in the wait- ing-room she said—

‘Now, Henry, the last time 1 went away you ,

‘Just wait. | wantto see if that’s our train,’ interrupts the husband, as he rose from his seat.

Going out, he was absent several minutes.

When he returned she was ready to say—

‘I wanted to say to you that the neighbors are

‘Dil I give you your ticket ?’ hesud- denly inquired.

She found it inher pocket, restored it and began again.

‘Of course, Henry, I have perfect confidence in yeu, but——’

‘You remember that you must not change at the junction ?’ he said, as he looked at his watch. ‘ When you reach there you will hear men yelling change trains for this and that place, but you sit still.

‘Haven't I been the journey four times and don’t | know all the stations. Now, lienry, although there will be no one in house but you, I have ;

‘Did you forget that lunch?’ he said excitedly, as his eyes wandered around and under the seat.

She had it in her lap ail the time.

Sin:;—-Now that the opposition papers have all said their worst against the. eleva tion of J. 8. Carvell, Esq., to the Senste of Canada—-and that they have signa’ly failed to make out even one reasonable eb- jection against the appointment, and that the New Hra editor, as might be expected, has fairly exhausted his ck in trade of useless vituperation against Senator Cer vell : and last, but not least, the editor of the Herald joins issue, and would make it appear that the people—1 mean the farmers of this Province—are opposed ; but, hap- pily, such is not the case. — ‘

Notwithstanding all that’s been written by our wayward editors spurred to duty, as they were, by some disappointed asp-r- ant and friends—Senator Carvell will ever stand high in the estimation of our Island farmers generally, as being one of these who added largely to our Island’s trate and commerce, and was ever busily engag2d in the most honorable branches of our cein- merce, as a buyer and exporter of produce. He was identified with every department of export for the past twenty years, and hes, last autumn, introduced a new species of trade—which is likely to be both profitable to himself and this country—whereby 16 will doubtless regain some of his former losses, which were large of produce. In trade, he is specu lative ; in his dealings, he is sociable and

henorable, and in -politics he exces, both as a leader and worker. W t- ness his triumph in 1878, against tie

The writer has made it a study to knew the minds of the people in King’s County on this matter, and is pleased tu learn that none of the farmers complain—but the re- verse ; and many of them give the above reasons for the faith within them. Hua- dreds are heard to say that it is a matter of great rejeicement to see one so able and well-calculated to do good appeinted to the Senate. Seeing that our new Senator has both ability and influence—and will” ve an able advocate for the needs of tlis Province — which are numerous — and certainly the result of having representa- tives who do not care to ask for our rights, fearing they will be denied. In future the farmers of this Province are determined to have our live men representing our wants, both in local and general Governments, and will always aim at choosing such, irres- pective of the Let or Township they miy happen to be born or live in.

The British navy has 56 ironclads of dif- ferent grades.

There are now 1,000 Sunday Schools .n France, 2,000 in Germany, ana 1,200 in Italy.

The amount expended on public schools in the United Kingdom during the yer 1878, was $13,677,000.

The net sum realized from the tax cn land and tenements in Britain was in the last financial year £1,075,511 12s, 6d.

According to recent returns, the popula- tion of Yokohama, inclusive of foreigners, is 67,499, and the number of houses, 20,- 055.

The assessed valuation of real estate in New York for the year 1880 is 3946 527,00) an increase of $23,395,000 last year.

In the last nine meuths the declared valve of wheat imported into Britian from Russa was £2,725,145, against £3,053,395 in the previous year.

In England there are nearly 900,000 people out of a population of 26,000,000 a))- solutely dependent upon rates and taxus for charitable support.

It is computed that in Paris there are 1,700 women of letters and 2,150 women artists. One thonsand of the former wriie goodish stories for children.
