Making Your Campus a Greener Place

BY SHANNON YOUNKER AN ENVIRONMENT IS A TERRIBLE thing to waste. A small group of concerned students have taken this to heart and soon the UPEI Student Union will have another official sub- organization. All of us realize that there is no way that the environment can be “saved” between now and graduation, but that shouldn’t stop people from working to improve campus step by step. Through the past few weeks, these students have been forming themselves into an

environmental committee. One of the committee’s first goals is to write a constitution and become ratified as an official suborganization. A benefit of being recognized by the Student Union

isa $75 start-up grant. The committee is also seeking other funding, allowing them to make a greater impact on campus.

A priority of the committee is to establish a recycling program here at UPEI. Several schemes were discussed and it was decided to place blue boxes around campus for paper recycling. Watch for boxes near computers and photocopiers. Committee members will be collecting boxes for pickup by SYNPRO. Also at the next meeting, the committee will be electing an executive, so new members are especially encouraged to attend. Meetings will beheld every Wednesday at 12:30 on the second floor of the Barn.

Meeting again this Wednesday, upstairs at the Barn. Topics: painting recycling signs to put above recycling bins; preparing our constitution; election of chair, vice-chair, treasurer, and secretary; and various other little tid-

bits. Meeting/finger painting starts around 12:30. All are welcome, and non-biology members are encouraged to attend. Bring your lunch and a paint brush if you have one.
