This letter is in response to ‘‘The Way It Should Be” whose letter was published on March 19/92.

This person is obviously missing the basic point to the Feminist Movement: EQUALITY.

The author of the letter obviously has not been ex- "posed to the way things were in ‘‘oldertimes’’. In ‘the socalled ‘*Good Old Days’* womenand children could be abused by their husbands/fathers, and could do nothing about it. Only recently have women been ‘recognized as separate individuals by law as well as

| Society. Inthe ‘‘good old days’’, women wentright trom taking orders form their fathers to taking orders from their husbands. In the ‘‘ good old days’’ married » women could not have their own opinions, they had to s pport their husbands’ opinions. Inthe ‘‘good old days’’, a woman's identity was SUSPENDED BY LAW. The two people became one, i.e. the man, after marriage. If he abused her, she could only stay and take it. She had NO LEGAL STANDING. How could she take him to court when she did not exist as a separate person? Women lived like this for centu- ri es, and you call us weak?

What ifI am not ready to get married, settle down and have kids? What if l want to get an education and develop a successful career first? What if I wanttobea fully developed. happy person with a successful career anda GOOD PAYCHECK before I get married and have the kids I can finally properly support without having to fight and claw day by day forevery penny? I grew up with a girl who got married at 19 ears of age, is working. and trying to starta family. She is happy this way. I would not be. We are both exposed to feminist views as teenagers, butit did not stop her from getting married. Ithas not stopped me from getting married. But, I want to enjoy my single life first. Besides, marriage proposals don’t exactly come to most of us by the load when we are nineteen or twenty anyway. How many guys at this university are ready for mar- riage and a family now? My guess is not too many. I have not metany. I don’t have anything against men, I will get married when the right person and time comealong. That is because I want to, not because I have to.
