Inquest Held In Death Of Siside Taxi Driver

Roy B. Pldgeon, 51-year-old summer-side taxi driver died in me Prince. County Hospital about 10 30 gm. yesterday morning from luiuries sustained when his car left the highway about 3:15 a.m. Sunday morning at a point east of the Imperial Diner on the south side of the paved highway west of the town of Summerside.

A coroner's jury last evening, after hearing evidence from six witnesses found that Roy Pldgeon came to his death when his car came in contact with a wood and earthen culvert crossing the ditch adjacent to the highway while travelling at a. rate of speed in ex- cess of the speed limit in that BT85. -

"We feel that contributing fac- tors to the cause of the accident are the poor condition of the

TM shoulder of the road at the point where the car left the highway and that another car was paying him at the time, travelling in the same direction."

Members of the coroner's jury were Ralph Dodds (foreman), Norman MacLeod, Roland Philip- son, Elmer Offer, Maxwell Robert- son, Frank Jenkins, Roy John- stone.

The jurymcn visited the scene of the accident yesterday afternoon and later viewed the damaged car that had been driven by Mr. Pldgeon.

Montreal Bani Branch Ribbed

MONTREAL Dec. 0 -(CP)- An armed man today held up a downtown branch of the Bank of Montreal and escaped with an estimated 35,000 to 56,000.

The short, dark bandit entered the bank during a lull and handed teller Mary Hunter anote de- manding money. The man fled and Miss Hunter pressed a bur- glar alarm. but the bandit had disappeared in a crowd.

Robert Ross. manager of the branch located in the Internat- ional Avlation Building, said he was surprised when the teller came to him and nobbed out her story.

The report was drawn up by the pacl.'s top permament military body. the standing group, from Allied intelligence reports.

The provision of up-to-date arms to Eastern Europe and to China, for the Korean war, has imposed a strain on Russia's re- sources.

But Western experts say the Russian arms industry is swiftly reaching peak production of con- ventional arms, and will soon be in a position to meet all the de- mands made upon it.

Remarkable Progress

Beside Russia's mobilized man- power. Allied resources are still "pitifully small", one senior Allied officer said today, though the 50 NATO divisions represent remark- able progress.

About half of these divisions are ready for immediate battle. The other half are in reserve a.t..a maximum of 30 diIys' call-many of them at three days.

The active divisions comprise a- bout six American. five British, five French. five ltalian, two Bel- eux (Belglum.- Netherlands and Luxumbourg) and the rest from Canadian, Norwegian and Danish contingenm. Greek and Turkish forces have not yet been fully in- tegrated into the European com- mand.

Allied production peaks, espec- ially American and British. will be reached from the end of 1063. but manpower needs will not be met until. Western Germany starts contributing. And that is not like- ly to be before the end of 1954.

OTTAWA. Dec. 0 -(Special)- Plans for the proposed Federal building in Charlottetown have not yet been completed. by archi- tects and draftsmen of the federal service. it was revealed in the House of Commons here today by Public Works Minister Alphonse Fournlev.

Mr. Fons-nler's statement that the plans were incomplete was in response to a question asked by W. Chester S. M-cLure, Conservative member for Queens. Text of Mr. McLurea question was:

Not Critical of Policy

Despite his call for lowered taxes, Mr. Cannon was not critical of Liberal fiscal policy up to now. He said recent federal surpluses were satisfactorily explained by the fact that Canada's national production had expanded annually after Finance Minister Abbott made his budget forecasts.

However, he said, such expansion now justified tax reductions. He was confident, that Mi. Abbott would realize he should make all possible reductions iri tax rates "consistent with the obligations the Federal government has to meet."

SEOUL. Dec. 10 -(Wednesday)- (AP) -- United States navy planes blasted four big North Korean i-all junctions Tuesday-one of them only 12 air miles from Soviet Siberia ein the biggest carrier strike of the Korean war.

The U. S. Navy announced that bombers from the carrier Essex virtually destroyed the vital rail trunk Junction at Honyung. through which Communist supplies flow southward from Manchuvia and Russia Siberia.

The navy sent 352 indlvidiial flights roaring out against the Communists.

Navy pilots said the trunk at Honyung was wiped out completely. The rail yards lie in the heart of the border city.

Honyung is at the northeastern tip of the Korean strip which thrusts fai: north of the rest of Korea. Communist Manchuria sur- rounds this strlp on tiiree sides.
