st. Ann's parish will miss her. sl she was an enthusiastic church worker, always ready to lend a help- ing hand. She was a kind obiilint and charitable neighbour, a idling wife and devoted mother. It in her home she will be most sOrely missed. There she was ever ready to glvg s sound advice and extend a guiding hand.

Grain Was Big Crop In Denmark 50 Years Ago

Denmark was not always a country devoted to animal bus- bandry. About fifty years ago Den- mark grew considerable quantities of grain but with increased com- petition from the New World and elsewhere it was decided to go in for butter, bacon and other ani- mal products and import the grain, supplementing" the grain with intensive cultivation in the production of feed!!! stuffs such as the msngei wurpei and green fodder. Farms in Denmark are for the most part in small lioldinss owned by the individual farmers, according to the Agricultural De- partment of the Canadian Nation- si Railways. There is considerable shipbuilding in Denmark, par- ticularly in motor ships equipped with Danish diesel motors.

It is impossible for me, in the tun,- nt my disposal, to give you any adequate report of all that took place at the convention. The week was crowded from Sunday afternoon till Saturday evening with meetings and social functions of all descrip- tions. While I will not tempt to

lescribe these in detail, I feel that -. have gained a considerable in- sight into the work of the Order, which I truatmay be of value to our Chapter in our future endeavors.

I wish, first of all to thank the Royal Edward Chapter, for afford- ing me the opportunity of attending as your delegate, the thirty-fifth sn- nual meeting of the Imperial Order, Daughters of the Empire, held at the ChsteauI-aurier, Ottawa, May 12th to 18th and for making it possible for me to stay in the Convention Hotel. I had c. very enjoyable trip, meeting as I did the delegates from Nova. Scotia. By arrangement I had my berth in the same car and my I. O. D. E. pin soon proved a badge of friendship. Marie Clark was with me as far as Montreal, and the Hai- lfax ladies, particularly were very interested 1n meeting her.

The Sunday service of Interces- sion for the work of the Order win. held at Christ Church Cathedral at 3 p. m. The procession of standard- bearers dressed in white followed by the National Officers and mambo a of the National Executive wssa very impressive sight. The standards were placed with quiet ceremony on the altar, and the Most Rev. John Charles Roper, D.D., in his address called attention to this significant gesture as a. symbol of the dedica- tion cf the work of the Order. The Crest of the Order was explained by the speaker.‘ ‘Ilhe seven points of the star represent the British domixiions forming the Empire. ‘The British Isles, Canada, Australia, New Zen- iancl, South Africa, India and tho British West Indies. The white band encircling the points, represents the bond that holds these together in the Enrplrc and the Crown repre- sents the sovereignty over all of the King. His Excellency the Governor- General read the two Scripture les- sons. Following the church service, the visitors were shown through the Parliament Building and tea was served in the Speaker's Chambers, Mrs. George Black being the hostess.

In the evening I was graciously invited to a dinner party at the Chateau, given by the Municipal Chapter of Ottawa to the members of the National Executivm I may say here that as s. representative of Prince Edward Island, I was in- cluded in a number of functions given in honor of the National Ex- ecutive. This opening dinner gave me a pleasant opportunity of meet- ing many of the outstanding mem- bers of the National Chapter, whose names have been household words in the Order for many years. The manager of the Chateau Laurie: had arranged a. delightful musicalc in the drawing room for Sunday ev- ening, which made a. very liively. restful closing to the first day in Ottawa.

Monday was devoted to committee work. The War Memorial Commit- tee was in session from 0 a. m. till 1 o'clock and accomplished. a great deal of business. Satisfactory re- ports were received from all of the bursary holders to date. It was in- ten-eating to hear the reports from the larger provinces, some of whom have had as many as twenty excel- lent candidates apply for their bur- saries in one year. I felt that under the circumstances our province has received very generous treatment. The Yukon does not receive any bursary. The presentation of the bursary-holders certificate at the college convocation was stressed. The auditors know definitely what the income will be for the next three years for bursaries and are willing that seventeen bursaries be given this year. They were allotted as follows: Nova Scotia, 2; New runswfck. 2: Saskatchewan, i; Al- berta, 2; British Columbia, 4‘. Man- itoba, 8; Ontario. d. We had no candidate this year. I was inter- ested to hear that the Provincial Chapter of Ontario is strii-Bgling to finance fivc extra ‘bursaries award- ed isst year, in addition to the regu- lar war memorial bursaries.

As the rato of interest on the in- melted funds of the war memorial has decreased considerably, the scholarships are now $1.400 r. year instead of 01,600. The opinion of the meeting was that scholars who are doing satisfactory work should he awarded the scholarship for the sec- ond year. It was felt that a special effort should he made to make the i’. O. D. ll. scholars better known so that they have as much prominence throughout the Dominion as the Rhodes Scholars. It was pointed out that their training was practically the same, (suggestions).
