St. Francis and his inspiration to service, Wesley and his leadership resulting in millions. of convers- ions. Carey and the inspiration of modern missions.

But these are so great and so far above our reach that we look at their achievements with won- der and feel incapable of anything approaching them. Yet our own disturbed period is providing il- lustrations of what Jesus meant which show illlmitable possibilities in the ordinary believer who claims the fulfillment of Christ's promise in his own case and for the work before him.

At a convention of laymen just held in Buffalo. Dr. von Thadden of Germany told a dramatic story of his experiences in a Nazi con- centration camp during which he found opportunity for Christian witness. and of his postwar ef- forts to revive the Protestant churches of Germany. especially through organization of the laity. The idea Vof..tha .Chrlstian..voca-L tlon "which he sets forth is a "summons for the everyday work- er in his work . . . a declaration that: in whatever work a man is called to serve man and God he may recognize the voice of God and the appropriate place for his own answer-his work-the day's work. any ordinary. useful. worthy work as Christian vocation."

This call from a layman to the laity has met with an amazing re- sponse in Germany. Men in the different professions are meeting in groups to consider how they may make their daily duty a means for advancing Christ's kingdom. and how they can Christ- ianlze the condltlonl under which their work is done. Conventions of Evangelical Christians have been held on a scale unparalleled in recent times among Evangelical Christiana. 350.000 having assem- bled last. year in East Berlin in answer to this call.

In those gatherings and in the recent convention in Buffalo three related purposes are being sewed -first. more geenral and effect- ive support ,of their churches' work; second, their life and work as Christians in their several oc- cupations, and third. their role as spokesman for and agents of the Church within the life of society.

Of these functions. as defined by President R. P. VanDusen. the second and third are receiving the heavier emphasis. Take the fol- lowing example of what a Christ- ian man can do through his con- nections In his everyday work. Ac- cording to a Berlin religious pa- per. "Walter Lange, a repatriated Protestant prisoner of war. start- ed work as an unskilled hand in the Opal works in Berlin. When he tried to turn conversation among his mates to the problem of God and of the meaning of life, he met only snubs or smiles. He would not give fit for tat, and so gradually his colleagues dropped their glbes against 'the Christian of the department!

"One day at the mid-day break they confronted him with a Com- munist official and a ding-dong discussion followed. Soon after- wards a Roman Catholic, who had heard of the affair. came to see Langc. They very soon agreed that something had to be done in this factory which employed 20,- 000 men. They began a search for Christians scattered through the factory. They were quite nu- merous. but most of them were afraid to acknowledge their faith. But the fact that one of their number was interested enough to take the lead encouraged the timid, and soon he had 1,500 men actively supporting him in his en- deavor to present Christ and His claims to the men."

The rest of the story is too long to tell. But the movement reach- ed out into the churches and ae- cured their co-operation. Twenty pastors declared their readiness to work for four weeks each in the Opal factory. Soon twelve con- vinced Christians were elected to the factory'a consultative commit-

LONDON-(CP) -If a seven- year-old child is unable to tell the tlmelto the nearest quarter- hour, he may be below the kin- dergarten standard. says the Sur- rey Teachcr-s' Association.

A special ...lb-committee of the organization has worked out what average boys and girls should know before they leave what. is described as the "infant's depart- merit."

A seven-year-old. the congrnitiee report says. should be able to car- ry out. straight-forward instruc- tions. deilver messages and read a simple story with enjoyment. He should be able to talk easily on subjects within his range of in- tereat and express ideas in words and pictures.

Youngsters in the kindergarten class should also know how to count up to 100, play shopping games and give change up to the equivalent of 25 cents. If they can form lettering and spell their names correctly, they are not do- lug so badly. say the Surrey teachers. .

The report suggests. however, that those standards cannot apply where shortage of school accom- modation prevails and emotional problems are experienced.

The bride, who was given in marriage by her father, wore the traditional floor length white sat- in. Her fingertip veil was of white marquisette. She carried a. bou- quet of white lilies. Her only jewelry was a double strand pearl necklace.

The maid of honor was Doris Mae Gareau. and a sister of the bridegroom, Sadie Csrignan. was the bridesmaid. Viola McGulgan and Shirley Carignan acted as flower girls.

Gerald Carignan, a brother of the bridegroom, served as best man. The groomsman was Fred- erick McGulgan.

Immediately following the cere- mony. a wedding breakfast was served at the home of the bride's parents. The afternoon re- ception was held at the Holy Fam- ily parish hall.

After a honeymoon trip through Wisconsin, the couple are taking up residence in Cornell.

Mr. Carignan is a. graduate of Perkins High School and now operates a farm in Cornell. The bride is a former student at St. Joseph's high school in Escanaba. The terse announcement did not mention the recapture in flight of the fighter planes.

It said only that the Consolid- ated Vultee Aircraft Corporation at Fort Worth. 'rex., has been con- ducting experiments for the air force involving air launching of I"-84s from B-Iills.

The uncement. was made following inquiries about a story in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. which said the 13-38 bombers now can carry jet. fighter planes in- side their A-bomb bellies. launch them in the air and recapture them in flight.

The F-84 Thunderjet has a max- imum speed of more than 000 miles an hour, can carry bombloads up to 4,000 pounds. and has a combat radius of more than 850 miles.

The 13-36 has top speed of more than 435 miles an hour and a range of 10.000 miles with 10.000 pound bombload dropped midway.

DR. MILTON SIMPSON

Many friends in this Province were shocked on April 11th when the news came of the sudden and tragic death of Dr. Milton Simp- son of Kalamawo, Michigan.

Dr. Simpson was born at Bei- mont. RE. 1.. on April 17th. 1879, where he spent his boyhood. Pie attended Prince of Wales College and taught school for three years, then in order to further his edu- cation he attendcd Acadia Uni- versity and graduated in 1905. He then went to Yale and after grad- uating from there, went. to Kala- mazoo, Mich.. where he was pro- fessor of English literature in the college. which position he held until he was .superannual.ed.

On April 10th he left home, driving himself to Battle Creek on a matter of business. He had con- cluded his errand and was return- ing on a three-way highway when he turned out to pass a car. Simultaneously the driver ahead did likewise and in order to avoid hitting him Mr. slammed on his brakes and skidded into the path of an oncoming truck and trailer.

He was thrown two hundred feet and as well as seven broken ribs and cracked scapula. he suffered a double skull fracture which caused his death. He was conscious when picked up and rushed to the hos- pital where he died the following

day.

His three children, Donald. Har- old, and Dorothy were notified at once of the accident but because of the distance did not arrive in time to see their father before his. death.

The funeral service was held from the Tl-uesdale chapel, on April 14th, where the officiating clergyman were Dr. T. Thomas Wylie and Dr. John Scott Ever- ton, president of Kalamazoo Col-

lege.

Besides the floral tributes which were beautiful. -there were several substantial contributions to the college library and to the Senior Citizens Fund of Kalamazoo. in
