The acceptance of a call to public service by men such as these carries with it the conviction that they will serve with dedication and distinc- tion.

It’s the largest dairy plant in Asia—and one of the largest in the world; and it was opened only last month by Mrs. Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit sister of the Indian Prime Minister.

With equipment Worth $1,500,000, the plant is internationally staffed by the Dairy Technology Institute and trains technicians for countries like Indonesia. Ceylon, Pakistan. Ko- rea and the Philippines, as well as for India.

The milk development scheme, started 15 years ago, consists of a network of farms in the Bombay dis- trict where farmers maintain their own herds of milch cattle on govern- ment land. Housing, water. cattle- feed and technical services are pro- vided for which the owner pays. In return, they sell milk to the Aarev plant which processes and markets it.

In retum for equipment furnish- ed through the International Child- ren’s Emergency Fund, the Indian govemment is providing over $2,- 000,000 worth of free or subsidized milk to needy mothers and children in the region.

Island dailymen have al ways maintained that their industry is the backbone of an agricultural cnm- mllnity. It is proving to he the case with this Bombay scheme, which has created considerable prosperity bv establishing subsidiary industries such as a bottle-making plant, and by promoting the construction of roads in rural collecting areas and the drilling of village wells to water cattle.
