Will Need Canadian Oil

The training of great numbers of airmen for war service will provide a large new market for Alberta oil, says a Western exchange. There will be additional demand for the Canadian oil because of the unfavorable exchange rate in pur- chasing oil from the United States.

The Turner Valley is expected to produce about 8,000,000 barrels of oil this year. This is, high gravity oil, yielding 6o per cent gasoline at the refineries. But a_very high grade of gaso- line is required for aviation- To meet the new demand, there will be need for, increased re- finery equipment.

This is but one of the innumerable reper- cussions from Canadasparticipation in_ the war and her activity in providing war supplies._ An- other will be the very favorable opportunity to attract tourists from the United States, who can- not go to Europe if the war continues and to

Forty Years Ago

Timely is the reminder in the Offflwfl 1014"“! of the significance of the date Oct. 30, I899. in the military history 0f Canada. It was on that date that the troopship Sardinian sailed from beflagged Quebec with Canada's first overseas contiiigent——1,00o officcrsand men of the 2nd (Special Service) Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment. They were bound for South Africa.

An amazingly short time had elapsed between Canada's offer of assistance to the MotherCoun- try and the sailing of the ship- President Kru- ger had delivered the Boers’ ultimatum on Octo- ber 9. On October i4, even before official ac- ceptance of its offer of aid came from Great Britain, the Canadian Government announced that eight independent companies. ¢a¢l1 _ strong, would be raised for the South Africa War.

Recruiting centres were opened across the Dominion and so immediate was the response of volunteers that within two weeks the full strength companies had been concentrated at Quebec City. They were formedinto the 2nd Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment, under command of Lieut. Colonel W. I). Otter, later to become Sir W. D. Otter. Second in command was Lieiit. Colonel L. Buchan. ‘ _

The padre, then Rev. F_ G. Scott, was destined to wi_n the widespread affection of Canadian soldiers in the 1914-18 war, when he was senior chaplain of the First Canadian Division-

On Feb. 18, 1900, the first Canadian blood was shed, but it was on the 27th of that month, subsequently observed as Paardeberg Day, that the great assault was launched, resulting in the unconditional surrender of the Boer commander Cronje and the taking prisoner of more than 4,000 Boers. The Second Battalion was then a pan of the- 19th Brigade, which included also battalions of the Duke of CornwalYs Light In- fantry, the Shropshires and the Gordon High- landers The courage and gallantry of the Can- adian troops earned tributes from all quarters. On Nov. 3o, i900, after taking part in many other engagements and "slouching eleven hun- dred miles over the veldt", the battalion marched past Queen Victoria at Windsor and received her personal thanks for its services.
