Leaving only $1,604 for the purchase of plank, stone and other materials re- quired, and for the payment of the laborers who are not hired by the year. This will never do.

The Fire Department, in their modesty, ask for only $4,500; but, votwithstand- ing the fact that two of the City Coun- cillors belonging to the majority are members of the Board of Fire Wardens who asked for $4 500, the sum in the estimates is $4,229.94 This sum does not include the amoun which must, of necessity, be expended in procuring a new boiler for the Silsby St2am Fire Engine ; and the total amount expended by the Fire Department can vot be much less than $6,000.

Then the School Board ask tor $9,600, and the amount put down in the esti- mates is but $9,300. Inasinuch as the School Board have full control, and @ first lieu upon the city revenues, they had better be voted the full araount at once!

Again, vo provision whatever has been made for the payment of debentures fall- iog due. True, the amount is only $1,800; and surely the Council do not intend that it shall not be paid when due. It should be remembered that the smaller the amount for which the city is in de- fault, the heavier the blow to its credit. The movey must, of course, be paid on demand.

Turning to the estimates of income we find $1,500 set down asthe ret result of the levy of an Income Tax—which the Council know cannot and will not be collected.

On the whole, it is quite evident that even according to the ciseese paring policy of the present Council, there will be at the end of the year, instead of a smal! surplus, a large deficit. This is pot as it should be. By all means let the expenditures be economical ; but let them also be met by the revenues of the year.

A meerine of citizens was held in the Stipendiary Magistrate’s office last evening. The meeting included Hon. D. Ferguson, y. Boe C.F, & 3. eee M. P., Patrick Blake, M. P. P., Rev. George W. Hodgson, Rev. W. B. King, Henry Beer, Esq., M. P. P., Hon, David Laird, Charles Palmer, Esq., C. C. Gard- ner, Esq., Dr. Jenkins, Dr. Beer, Dr. Conroy, and many other prominent gentle- men not already identified with the meve- ment. R. R. FitzGerald, Esq., moved, seconded by A. B. Warburton, Esq., that, —

Whereas, in the opinion of this meeting, it is desirable that the squares and streets in Charlottetown shall be planted with trees, and that a society be formed with that object,

Therefore resolved, that such society be formed at once and that immediate steps be taken for planting our streets and squares, and thata day be set apart to be called Arbor Day, and be specially devoted to tree-planting in Charlottetown,

Further resolved, that the Arbor Day for the present year (1884,) be the 24th May.

This resolution passed unanimously, and the following report of the Provisional Committee was read and discussed ;—

REPORT OF COMMITTEE.

Ata meeting of the Provisional Com- mittee appointed to organize an association and to prepare measures for planting our squares and streets with trees, held on the 12th May, instant, the following resolutions were adopted :-—

1. That the association shall be known as the Charlottetown Arbor Society.

2. It shall have for its object the plant- ing of the equares and streets of the city with trees, and the taking care of the same, and shall have one day in each year specially set apart for such tree-planting.

3. The officers shall consist of one Presi- dent, two Vice-Presidents, a Secretary- Treasurer, and an Executive Committee of five persons, who shall be elected annually, on the first Monday of April in each year.

4. The members of the society shall con- sist of all applicants who enroll themselves as such, and duly plant one or more trees in some public street or square, or pay an annual fee of one dollar.

5. The powers of the committee, until further ordered and defined by by-:aws of this seciety, shall include the general management of all its affairs and the jova- tion and description of the trees to be planted.

6. The committee recommend that the first Arbor Day be on the 24th of the pre- sent month (the Queen's Birth Day), They also recommend that each tree to be planted that day must be some one of the following kinds :—

(1.) Rock Maple, (2.) White Birch, (3.) Elm, (4.) Oak, (5.) Lime, (6.) Chestnut, (7.) Rowan or Mountain Aeh, (8 ) Indian Pear, (9.) Ash, (10.) Butternut, (11.) Black Walnut.

To be not less than one and one-quarter inches in diameter and six feet in height, straight-limbed, well and regularly branch- ed, without blemish or defect. All to be subject to inspec‘ion and approval of com- mittee.

7. That a notice to above effect be pub- lished in the newspapers, notifying parties of the species of trees to be planted, and suggesting that persons having these trees bring them in to town a day or two before the Arbor Day.

Fatal Collision.

PrrrseurG, Pa., May 14. By acollision on the B. & O. Railway, to-day, twenty persons were killed and many injured. The traina took fire, and many were cremated.

Supreme Court.

May 15. Donphy vs. Hughes—This was an action of ejectment, tried last January, when a verdict was found for the defendant. A rule nisi was afterwards obtained to set this verdict aside, and for a new trial. The Court has been all day engaged hearing the argument on this rule. Davies, Q. At the recent City election in Marshall, Mich., M. V. Wagner, Esq., was re-elected Mayor by a largely increased majority, The Marshall Statesman (a Republican paper), in commenting on the result says: ‘“‘Mayor M. VY. Wagner's majority was larger this year than last. Evidently his stirring administra- tion has found favor in the eyes of many re- publicans. While we would have preferred seeing a republican in the chair, we are cer- tain there is no Otner man in the city who would bear the honors of the office more grace- fully or work more heartily for the best in- terests of the town.’’ Mr. Wagner is a prac- tical business man, thoroaghly systematic and possessed of untiring energy.
