Presents George Cross To Widow

LONDON (Reuters)-The Queen Monday presented the George Cross-Brilain”s highest civilian award for bravery-to the widow of an engineer who stayed with hi runaway locomotive and was killed when it crashed.

The posthumous award was made to John Axon. who fought scalding steam and boiling water pouring into thel locomotive cab in his attempt to avert disaster. He had ordered his fireman to jump.

Ninety-six men were eligible to vote. The number who did was not announced.

A strike could tie up all coliier- les of the Dominion Coal Company in Eastern Cape Breton. The rail- road la a Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation subsidiary and the bulk of its freight is coal. A strike also might affect operations at Dosco's Sydney steel plant.

The men seek a 40-hour weck. wage parity with CNR and CPR crews for certain classes of work and holidays with pay. A concilia- tion board last month recom- mended against their 4 ands.

"As a lawyer. he was learned In the law and. sitting on the Bench. I admired him. He never wastedl the time of the Court. His argu- ments were terse. to the point. and cogent. and it was a pleasure to listen to his pleadings. I was for some years connected with him as a trustee of the Lady Wood estate. and his advice in this connection was always appreciated.

"He was not only a great lawyer but a dear friend as well, and be will be greatly missed at the Bar and as a citizen. My heart goes out to his good wife and to his daughters.

"I much regret his passing and. now that he is gone. may his soul rest In peace."

His great grandfather Mathe- son emigrated from Scotland to Prince Edward Island in the year 1837 and he claims lineage in the MacPhecson. the MacLeod. the Martin and the MacDonald Claus. Premier Matheson in assuming this honorary position will be fol- lowing in the footsteps of another noted Highlander. the late . Angus L. MacDonald, Premier of Nova Scotla.

Furore Over The Stolen Ballots

STE. GENEVIEVE. Que. (CF) Mayor Armand Lacombe and Rol- land Gratton. secretary-treasurer of this Montreal suburb, Tuesday went into seclusion while a furore continued over the disappearance Sunday of ballots to be used in a municipal election.

Mr. Gratton said in an interview that the ballots were taken from his home ot gunpoint.

A municipal clectlon cheduled for Monday was postponed indefi- nltely by the disappearance of the b a llo t s. Opposition candidates have questioned Mr. Gratton's statements.

Mr. Gratton said in an interview a red-headed bandit held him up at his home. The man first at- tempted to bribe him. then stole the ballots.

The bandit. Mr. Gratton said, of- fered him SL000 then raised it to 82.000 ”if I let anyone who pre- sented himself at the polls vote."

He said he refused and the ban- dit forced him at gunpoint to drink a "large glass of rye." The drink knocked him out. he sold. and when he recovered the ballots were gone.
