It is the commanding figure | of a vigorous man of mature years, and is | fall of power and manly dignity. In the second picture we see St. Jerome, the aged jand rugged student, in seclusion among rocks and forest, deeply engrossed in his book; a couching at his side, jand a cress and a at his feet. The third picture bring: us to the shore of an eastern bay, where St. Augustine of Hippo, vested in cape and mitre, and bear- ing his pastoral staff, stands with an open book in his hand, his kindly eyes uplifted, as though seeking inspiration as he writes. | The three pictures, so different in subject, |agree in beauty of conception, vigor of execution, faithfulness of representation, | and subtilty of beautifully-blended colors. They are executed in the styl le of fre -scoes, with the advantage that, while neither dull of surface, as are many other styles of mural painting, nor shining like ordi- nary oil paintings, they may be viewed with equal pleasure and advantage from any standpoint. They display in the artist the student of his subject as well as the master of his art. The new work is in memory of the father and mother of the Rev. W. B. King, and Mrs. Carbonell. The wood-work is from the factory of | Messrs Lowe Bros., the carving is the creditable work of Mr. W. C. Whitlock, all from the designs of Mr. W. C. Harris, A. R.C. A. The whole decoration is most | artistic and effective, and, withal, most pleasing in its wealth of beautiful subdued colouring. This little Chapel is already one of the most beautiful places of worship in Canada.

Mr Dillon Addresses a Public Meeting at Lower Montague.

Pursuant to notice a meeting was held in the public hall at Lower Moutagre on

from that section to the winter at New Perth. The enterprising farmers of that progressive part of our Province were present and were unanimons and en- | thusiastic about the winter creamery.

| Mr. Chas. Macneill presided, and Mr. T J. Dillon, Dairy Superintendent was the | speaker of the evening. He adduced

strong and convincing arguments in favor of those present having their butter made ina uniform, skilled, and up to date } manner, such as is afforded by the winter creamery. He explained the terms upon which the business would be conducted, and the way in which the butter would be disposed of. Mr. J..R. Moore, Manager of the New Perth Creamery, alsu addressed | the meeting, and after some further dis- cussion, a number of the farmers resolved to send their milk, each one taking his turn at hauling it to the factory. Two |} waggons will be run, and a good quantity of milk willbe contributed. Among those | present at the meeting were Mr. Geo. B. | Aitken, M. P. P., and John Annear, Presi- dent of the Montague Dairying Co.

But when he fortifies his memory by citing from letters published at the time, it 1s, to say the least, very cool of Mr. Heard to ask the citizens to accept his ipse dixit to the contrary.” The questions of the source of supply and ownership had been well threshed oat before the election of the Water Commissioners. When Mr. Mac- donald was urgently insisting upon cityown ership, Mr. Heard was as strongly in favor of company ownership, as the se yuel will

supply Mr. Heard is — if it is not a}

fact that he, even at the late date of the arrival of Mr. Tidd, advised that gentle man to seek for water on the bill and ata depth of about 400 feet from the surface, which advice Mr. Tidd, fortunately for the city, summarily rejected. Mr. Davies was not the only ome who doubted any good reanits from Mr. Macdonald’s forecast and advocacy ofa supply from the ‘grown: water,’ as against that of ‘artesian * wells, So strong and almost universal was this scepticism for a long time, and- so thor- oughly was Mr. Macdonald regarded as the e xponent of driven wells, that I well remember one leadiag citizen declaring publicly that in the event of such a: supply proving adequate, he would propose that a@ monument be erected to Mr. Macdonald.

Some Very Sensational Evidence on Saturday.

The Lexow. Investigation Committee adjourned till the 19th. The principal wit- ness on Saturday was Dr. Milton White- head, who has been four times ar- rested fur alleged procuring abortion, but whe, by the payment of blood money to the police and the lawyers recommended by them, had liis cases postponed from time to time, and was never tried. He said that Judge Koch. of the Yorkville police court, he ld him for the grand jury ln one case, wad some time after a lady had come to him asking that an operation be performed, saying “Judge Koch was the cause of her misfortune. He refused todo as requested, She went to Judge Koch, and the latter sent for Wiitehead, to whom he said :My God, [ did not know my girl had been to see you.” He then told White- head that he would have no more trouble with his cases.
