In 1856 he was made a Knight Commander | of the Bath, and was appointed to the command successively of the troops at Corfu, and of a division at Shorneliffe and | Dover ; he was finally placed as Major-General on the staff of | the Bengal army in November last, when he proceeded to India. ile succeeded to the command of the troops hefore | Dethi in June last on the sudden death of General Anson, | whom he has followed to the grave after an interval of scarcely | four weeks’ duration. General Barnard married in 1828 a! daughter of the late Brigadier James C. Craufurd.

‘Sort Worx’’ at Pesnawer.—The following is an extract froma letter from an Artillery officer, dated Peshawur, June 2% :-—« We have formed here a beautiful 6-pounder horse- battery, with 160 Europeans attached, the only battery in India in which the drivers are not natives ; 74 ride and the rest sit on the guns and waggons ; in three weeks we procured | volunteers, taught them to ride, and tfained 130 horses; we | want twenty more horses. Iam always picturing to myself | the horror of people at home, when they hear of the succes- | sion of atrocities perpetrated by the scoundrel Sepoys, and of | the narrow escape we have had of losing India. We disarmed the 10th Irregular Cavalry here, and then disbanded them for | not charging the 55th Native Infantry, who were in open | mutiny, when ordered to do so.

We managed to get these | doves, as they are called, dismounted within 100 yards of the | guns, sent a party to seize their horses at their pickets, then commanded them to lay down their arms, then sent searchers | to relieve them of their paraphernalia, made them take off| their coats, then ordered them to take off their boots. Fancy a cavalry regiment hard at work taking off each others’ boots, under the influence of artillery! Each man‘ was then given | $ annas (12d.), the whole secured, marched off to the river side, where they are to be embarked in boats and sent down | the Indus, where | expect every mothor’s son will have a chance of being drowned in the rapids. To-night we pick out horses to complete the battery from the disbanded cayalry. In these | times of danger and treachery, we don’t bother ourselves about | the quirks of law, but hang, shoot or flog as circumstances arise. We stand no nonsense here. The General swears he will maintain discipline. What a wonderful mercy the tele- graph communication has been kept up in the Punjaub ; here is a use it was put to:—A letter was intercepted at Pindee, which said, ‘ Three natives of high rank (giving names) sit in council to-morrow to decide what to do against the English.’ Telegraph said, ‘ Let a spy attend and report.’ This was done, and in a few minutesafter the outlines of the plot were before Lawrence. Telegraph again, * Hang them all three.” In 15 minutes more they were hung. Short work.”

CLERGYMAN IN IRELAND.

Father Conway, of Mayo, writes to Lord Palmerston as follows :—

In selecting me as one worthy to be honoured by a state prosecution, you raise me far above the aim of my highest ambition. I had not deemed myself worthy to represent the pure, the steadfast, and untainted members of the Lrish Church. My lord, you flatter me by your decision, and be assured [ shall not shrink from the result. My lord, if it be a crime to instruct the people, and explain to them their | moral duties, [am guilty. If it is a crime to exercise the | franchise I possess in voting for a representative honourable | and faithful as George Henry Moore has proved himself to be, [ plead guilty. If it is a crime to admonish and advise | my fellow electors to withhold their support from one who | had proved himself unworthy of their confidence and un-| faithful to his solemn pledges, [ confess the crime,—but of | the outrageous charges brought against me by unscrupulous | and interested witnesses, needy place-hunters, and aspirants! for government notice, of these I plead not guilty,—and no | matter what may have been the result of the inquiry before | the committee of the house as regards my conduct at the late | election for this county, your lordship will find a different verdict when the case comes for trial before an unprejudiced jury, enlightened by the legal acumen of an experienced and learned chairman, neither vain, weak-minded, nor prejudiced, and who will aot allow loose hearsay evidence to guide him in his charge.

My lord, although I am but an humble Irish priest, one of the people, having sprung from the people, and unsupported save by the voluntary donations of a faithful and generous flock, I yet fear not the consequences of a State prosecution. If you deem it politic, my lord, to increase my influence with the people, you are certainly adopting the proper course ; but if by this means you design to stifle opinion, and remove all obstructions to your policy of fettering the [rish Church, and giving a clear stage to your corrupt political agents, yor had better be undeceived. My lord, the day is passed in Mayo when unprincipled place-begyars and pliant politicians. the mercenary tools of an unscrupulous miuister, could find popular support. There may be a numerous band of corrupt | voters ready at any time to sell their influence ; but my lord, | the persecutor of the Catholic church and the prosecutor of |

her faithful ministers may henceforward send bis creatures,

to other counties, where the watchmen may be sleeping and the fold become an easy prey.

My lord, you say you are prepared to prosecute me. Iam ready—are you prepared for the consequences?—I am. So God defend the right.

ReconcisaTion or THE Powers 1x Turkey.—It kas been officially announced that the Austrian Goverment has acceded to the arrangement made during the visit of the Emperor of the French to Osborne, and that Austria joins with England in recommending the Sultan to annul the Moldavian elections. As the only objection raised by him was that the previous demands of France were backed by four of the Powers and not by the whole six, there can be no ground for further refusal, seeing that unanimity is once more obtained.

The Ist division of the 56th Regiment embarked at Queenstown on board the Southampton transport sailing vessel on Monday, which sailed direct for India next morning. |

A meeting was held on Monday at the Mansion House to devise measures for affording immediate relief to our un-| fortunate fellow countrymen aud women in India, who have suffered the loss of their property, or their means of sub- | sistence, by the fearful calamities with which they have been | visited. The object of the mecting was one worthy of a Christian country ; and, indeed, no one whose heart contains | a spark of humane feelfng could fail to sympathise with it, | and to labour for its attainment. We hope that tens of thousands of pounds may be raised to meet the emergency, and that every Englishman will be prepared to contribute what he can, be it little or much, towards alleviating the misery which now exists among the English in India.

A Marr’s Nest. —The editor of the Monitor, true to the | school of detraction with whieh he is at present connected, | publishes a communication about a Mr. John McEwen, of St. Peter’s, having received a letter from the Commissioner of Public Lands, reminding him that a bond of his had been sold to the Government by the vendors of the Worrell Estate, and This communication informs us that the whole district of St. Peter’s had been thrown into consternation and alarm by the demand of the Commissioner, which has been construed into an* application of the ** iron rod,’’ and a desperate attempt to put money dis- honestly into the pockets of the officials. Now the whole story about John McEwen and his bond, and the public alarm con- sequent thereon, is easily disposed of. It appears there are two persons named John McEwen at St. Peter’s, Both are in the books of the Worrell Estate. Both had given bonds for land purchased. The amount of one had been paid, and the bond cancelled. The John McEwen who had paid his bond received (in mistake, of course,) the letter which had been intended for the John Me-

The other remains yet unsatisfied.

Ewen who had not paid. He was, as might be supposed, sur- prised at the demand made upon him, and having business to transact in Charlottetown, he availed himself of the opportu- nity of his visit hither to enquire at the Land Commissioner's Office respecting the letter he had received. A few moments’ conversation with Mr. Aldous satisfied him that he was not the person for whom the letter was intended—-his account was turned up, wherein credit for the full amount of his bond had been given, as received by Col.Swabey, the late Commissioner ; and the man left the office fully satisfied with what he had seen and heard. Nothing is more common than a mistake in the transmission or receipt of a letter addressed to an individual, when there are others of the same name residing in the same district or settlement; and such was the mistake about which the Monitor’s correspondent has written so much balderdash. The writer is easily identified, and his animus is well understood. Mortified beyond expression at the social and political degradation into which he has fallen by his base treachery and apostacy in 1854, and conscious that the constituency whom he dishonoured will never trust him more—he devotes his leisure to the grati- fication of his vindictive feelings by scribbling calumnies for any unprincipled press that will open to him its columns. Living in a settlement too enlightened to give him much em- ployment in the inditing of prescriptions for the sick—stripped of official duties-—and too indolent for productive labour, the Genius of Detraction could not have found a more ardent deyotee, nor the Monitor a correspondent so well qualified to fcod its columns with streams of calumny as black, foul and poisonous as the contents of the cobwebbed phials in his

neglected rat-hole laboratory.

The letter signed ‘* an Elector,’’ in the same paper, is from the same pen, and contains only one true statement, which is | —that the writer attended Mr. Whelan’s political meeting at Morell, about a month ago. It was indeed a novelty to see

Mr. Gallypot on that occasion, because, in former days,

when his relations towards the people were such, that he | might be expected to put his hands in his pockets to pay for their refreshment at a public-house, he always framed an ex- cuse for absenting himself; but on the late oceasion, when not

expected to treat, no false excuse was necessary, and by at-/

tending the meeting he thought some mischief might be done. If the people of Morell were opposed to Mr, W., as is alleged by ‘* an Elector,’’ they had an excellent opportunity for show- ing the opposition ; but that the very reverse of opposition was the predominant feeling, was shown, in the first place, by the fact, that the two or three persons who had concocted resolu- tions on the evening previous to the meeting, in a spirit of opposition to Mr. Whelan as a representative and to the party with which he is connected —and came to the meeting with those resolutions in their pockets, — were either ashamed or afraid to bring them forward ; and in the second place, if the electors about Morell were opposed to Mr. Whelan, it is strange that the opposition could find no other leader than a limping itinerant cobbler, who, but for Mr. W.’s humane interference, would probably have been ducked in the Morell for his paias.

We perceive that the Monitor, notwithstanding the de- claration regarding the use of personalities, made at the commencement of its career—has commenced to attack through the letters of its correspondents, the pecuniary circumstances of some of its political opponents. Mr. Cooper may inform us, in the cant of the press, that he is not responsible for the opinions of his correspondents. On broad public questions, involving great principles, an editor cannot, indeed, justly be held accountable for the views of his contributors ; but when a public journalist opens his columns to attacks upon private character—no matter from what quarter those attacks may come—wé old that he is as amenable to punishment as the man who advises or enables an incendiary to set fire to the house of his neighbour, or opens the way to the highway robber to pursue his criminal calling. The present and past circumstances of two persons in office under the Government, are made the subject of derision in the last Monitor. We allude to the fact, not because the parties named suffer the least un- easiness from all that the Monitor can publish about them, but to expose the inconsistency of a journal that so recently deciared its determination to abstain from personal reflections of all kinds. Reference to the poverty, past or present, of any man’s circumstances comes with an exceedingly ill grace at the present time from one of the organs of the Tory party—itself just issued into the world by the aid ofa few paltry pounds, doled out with a reluctant hand by some of the members of a secret association—when several of the prominent men of that party have fallen from their once high positions in commercial circles into insolvency and ruin, and others of the same party are in a fair way to follow their example. To render the Mo- nitor perfeetly consistent in all things, we shall not be sur- prised to see, in some forthcoming No., a dissertation on the beauties of filial piety, and an eloquent denunciation of the enormity of a son cruelly depriving his aged mother of the meaps of existence,-and then leaying her to the cold charity of the world.

He will also cut a correct Profile Likeness of any of the audi- ence. ‘The Puzzling Letter, having thirty-four compartments, will be folded ina stylo that has perplexed many to rofold. Mr. Nellis will then introduce his peculiar mode of Writing, and present the audience with a specimen of the same. Ho will also display great dexterity by opening and winding-up « Watch, and will, with the greatest care, take out the erystal and cap, and replace them without injury. With six cards he will form a Box perfectly square, hy folding them, which, unlike Pandora’s Box, will contain no mischief. Mr. Nellis will play several Marches, Waltzes, &c., on that beautiful instrument, the Aecordeon. After which he will also play on the Drum and Triangle. Not only is Mr. Neliis unrivalicd in the manner of using these instruments, but challenges competition in the effect. He will also execute several Popular Airs with taste and precision on the Violin- cello. During the Entertainment Mr. Nellis will sing a favorite Sung.

time. ‘This extraordinary and laughable act has been acknowledged by those who have witnessed it, in Europe and in this country, to be one of the most singular and wonderful performances. Mr. Nellis will close bis entertainment by dancing a Hornpipe, thereby evincing his great power of equilibrium to a remarkable degree.

ga@e° The skill and dexterity with which Mr. Nellis uses his FEET, as a substitute for Hanns, is an unmistakeable illustra- tion of the manner in which human ingenuity will seek out the means of supplying the deficiencies of organization ; and is also a striking example of what may be accomplished by patience, perseverance, ingenuity and enterprise.
