RUMOR GROUNDLESS - Police report that there is no truth in the rumor which was cir- culating yesterday morning stating that a young child on its way to school had been killed by a high iension wire.

CITY POLICE COURT -- At the Stipendiary Magistrate's Court yesterday, two men convicted of vagrancy were each sentenced to 90 days 111 jail. A man charged with being drunk and incapable was fin- ed S5 and costs or 10 days.

L.P.U. CARD PARTY-A very successful cord party was held Monday niglit at the L.P.U. Hull. sponsored by the Women's Social Club. There were 15 tables play- ,ng. The winners were: Ladies first prize. Mrs. Ralph Yeo; la- dies second. Mrs. Helen Connors and Mrs. Ben Shepherd. Gents first. Mr. Blair Ryan; second, Mr. H. A. Ebers; door prize. Mr. Wil- liam Girffin; freezeout. LEGION COLLECTING BOOKS .- The Provincial Command cf the Canadian Legion is at present col- lecting pocket size books to for- ward to the fighting men in Korea. At present two boxes have been gathered together. and these are being sent to the Dcminion com- mand who forward them to the war zone. Books requested for this pur- pose are regular pocket editions, which include such small magazines as Coronet and Reader's Digest. These can be left at any branch of the Canadian Legion ln this Prov- ince who will forward them to the Provincial Command.

TO ATTEND FUNERAL Messrs. Joseph and Brendon Flood of South Melville, accompanied by Mrs. Harold Donahue of Com- wall, left by motor on Wednesday last en route to Lowell. Mass., to attend the funeral of their uncle. Ernest .7. Ready. whose death had occurred there suddleilly the pre- vious day. The late . Ready had a host of friends in this province besides many relatives who will all regret his untimely passing. He was more than an annual visitor to the Island. having made several trips these past seasons and had spent the month of October last with his sister, Mrs J. D. Flood. South Melville.

IN MEMORIAM

NEIL R. DIMLEOD

There pased away unexpectedly in the P. E. 1. Hospital on Novem- ber 4th. 1950. Neil R. MaoLeod in his 73rd year. His death was a great shock to his family and also to the community of Hunter River where he was a life-long resident on the old homestead.-

The deceased was a man of sterl- ing character, noted for his fair dealings and honesty with his fel- lovmien.

He leaves to mourn his loss. his wife (nee Katherine Nicholson) also lwo sons and three daughters. namely: George and Cortland at home; Jeanette (Mrs. Henry Pol- lar) 'North Wiltshire; Christene in Toronto and Beatrice at home.

Also left to mourn is one bro- ther.. John Alexander, New Mexico.

His funeral which was largely attended was held at the home on November 7th and was conducted by Rev. Howard Christie assisted

by Rev. Donald Nicholson. The remains were then conveyed to I-larlsviile Cemetery. there to

await lhe glorious resurrection.

But the blinding flash which slznalled. the advent of tin; age was not like the light of the Star which shone over 1,900 years ago announcing to a troubled world that a Saviour lad been born, The Star that sihone in the east brought hope. The light. of the atomic bomb brought fear. And the shadow cast upon the earth on that fateful day has now entered Into our livesond blighted us with 4! sessumsm that has no equal in history.

Who can analyze the tragedy of 319 Present moment and not be filled Wllih anguish? Europe, that has yet to rebuild its cities and towns. is once again bristling with tears of an approaching -conflict. The Cold war has become warm and with it there comes back to nf1Bm0l'y the scenes of concentra- tion. camps. of the separation of fanrulles. of night bombing and of vast destruction, the killing and the crippling of little children, the humiliation of occupation.

Hate Went on

Mon had hoped that time would heal. the scars that World War II had left on the minds and bodies of men, women and children. Sure- ly men would now learn to live to- gether in peace and harmony. But. the horrors of Europe are now re- echoed in Korea. Dunkirk has' lived again with a new evacuation. And once again in Canada we bid farewell to troops. and tremble with the thought that other lands streaked wi-lih blood-God forbid -may be the resting place of our youth. As these scenes flash be- fore our minds it almost seems as if the war never ended. In truth it didn't. for men did not ellace from their hearts selfishness and hatred. They went on as usual.

The pessimism of the moment is increasing for it is now realized that we have been escaping from reality in. relying on the myth of the atomic bomb. It has not pro- tected us and the enemy has con- tinued his course with is pace as

mind of man, which is beyond the reach of any weapon of war. The method of defeating Communism is by an idea-the positive answer of the Christian way of life. But. unfortunately. we are unable to present this in all its vigor-I for we have lost contact with its source. There is a hollow ring to our pro- tests on behalf of democracy. free- dom. the dignity of man and so on. Why? Because we do not realize that they are grounded on God. Man today does not know God. That is why he is pessimistic.

Only One Way out

There is only one way out of the morass in which we find ourselves at this time and thatisby chang- ing our every thought. word and deed. It is necessary to renovate our souls, to repress our passions and to replace selfishness and hatred with a love for others,-in -brief, to sow the seeds of true peace.

Here we can take a lesson from those who silently endured the bombing of their homes and cities. As a. general rule they do not de- sire lo wreak the same savage de- struction on others. Those who survived the horrors of the con- centration camp are not today the ones who hate. They are not the armchair strategists who suggest at the first moment of despair that we use an atomic bomb. No! They have seen the very depths to which war can bring men, and from those depths they found that there is only one way to cure hatred and that is by learning to love God ihrough prayer. They have learned to say "Out of the depths have I cried unlo Thee, O Lord: Lord hear my voice."

In this hour of crisis we must become men of prayer. But to do this we must first learn how to pray. in is not simply a matter of bowing our heads once a week or once in a while. Nor does it con- sist. only in askiiia for things. It does mean asking for things. lhougli it means for more than that. Technically speaking. prayer is an elevation of ihe mind and heart to God, an intimate and lov- ing conversation with Him, in which we adore Him, praise Him. thank Him for Ills benefits and beg His mercy. Tn pray is to ask as a lover of God and as a lover of the world. We pray not only for

relentless as the movement of time. Now that we are challenged,. we realize our incapability of con-! trolling the situation. Our fears are evidenced by the threat to usei the bomb when we know full well 1 that dropping it will not stop ax conflict. It may postpone the critical hour, but it will not bring about peace. It is a weapon of destruction, but not of construc- tion. The tragic error of the moment is the notion that the enemy Com- I I

munism can be defeated by atomic weapons. This is a fallacy for Communism does not travel by Jet. propulsion through the air. nor by any other modem conveyance. It is an idea and its battleground LS the

ourselves but for all the world which God Himself loves. What prayer will teach us is humility. It will make us realize that the source of all power of life. of peace. of hope is not primarily in ourselves, but in God.

When man has learned to pray truly. which is to know God through love. then he will forget himself. He will have ihe vision of the oneness of the world in God. He wi'l begin to think of others. to love them. In that way peace may result.

In this gloomy hour of historv hope may shine as a beacon of confidence. if only we will learn to build in God's way. We will do this when he start to pray.
