Evidence at the Investigation.

No new light has been thrown upon the whereabouts of Artemas McLean, who so suddenly and mysteriously disap- peared from Summerside on Sunday lat Danie! Noonan,in whose house McLean was last seen on Sunday morning is _ still under arrest. Stipendiary Magistrate Mc- (Quarrie is doing all in his power to find out the missing man's fate. Below is a suim- mary of the evidence tsken at the investi- gation which began on Thursday afternoon:

Joun Suexry:f Sea Cow Head—Noon- an’s son-in-law—(sworn) | remember the lith of January. It was Saturday. 1 was home part of the day, and in Summerside half ot the day. I arrived at Noonan’s at Sp.m. Idid not know Artemas McLean then, but knew him afterwards. I saw him at Nuonan’s house that night at 8 or9 v'clock. 1 could not teli that there was any liquoron him then. 1 saw him first in the second room onthe right after you enter the front door, called the bar-rvom, There were others there; idont know who they were. Iwas behind the counter. I did not notice McLean coming in. He did not ask me anything. He said —s that | took notice of. He stayed 5, 10 or 15 min- utes, and then went out. I think Daniel Nvonan was then about the house. 1 saw him (McLean) again about 10 minutes after ten o'clock, sitting on the table across the hall, opposite the room where I first saw hin. When | first saw him ne one but himself and John Gardiner, who came in with me were there. I thought he made a trip at Gardiner. I told him not to do that. He went out the back door into the yard. This was about 10 minutrs after ten. lam in Noonan’s house olten I saw this man there once before. Gardi- ner was there when McLean went out the back door. He walked steadily, I saw him go downthe steps fromthe dour. | saw him again between 10.30 and 11 o'clock In the meantime I went un to show Mr. Gardiner his bed. I would not swear it was notll when 1 saw him the second time. 1 will swear it was not 11 when he went out first. Thenext time I saw him was when I went out to see my horse, and saw him lying at the entry to the yard. His head was pointing towards the raiiway, lying on his face. I went up stairs and told Will Noonan there was a man lying in the yard. He told me to go down and put him in the stable. 1 went and carried him into the stable, He seemed asleep. I consider he was drunk. I did not know this was the same man I teld to go out. I Jsid him ou the stable floor, went upstairs and told Dauiel Nuonan. He told me to bring him in the house. 1 took him into the rvom. He began to wake up. Mr, Noonan helped me to carry him upstairs. Noonan asked him who he was. He said, **My name is McLean, and | live in Summerside.” We laid him on the bed and took off his shoes. This was the first time I found out his name. He had a round cap, som: thing like mine, « brown or slate overcoat, light color pants, shoes and overshoes, no scarf, uuless it was under his overcuat. We left him on the bed. I don’t remember whether we left a light ornot. I then went dowa to the xit- chen. We put him in the first room to the left as we go up stairs. Chere are three doors from this room into other rooms. John Gardiner slept in one vf the rooms, Wi.l Noonan in another, and no ope in thethird. About fifteen minutes after | went back at Mr. Noonan’s request and found him asleep. Jerry’s shop was closed then. I could not say what time Jerry's shop closed. When I picked the man up there was no light in Jerry’s shop ; when | put him out there my wife and Annie McDonald were up in the parlor in front of the house. I came in and went up stairsto bed. D. Noonan sleeps up in the attic over the kitchen Noonan could communicate with McLean’s room by coming down to the secund floor. Annie McDonald slept in the next room to Gardi-

ner’s. My wife woke me up between three and four o'clock, and told me_ there was some one in the nursery.

The children slept over the kitchen. I got up, put on my pants, went into McLean's room, and saw Gardiner there dressed. He was drunk. I assisted him up the stairs, and asked him where McLean was. He said the man disappeared like the devi). I I did not go into” McLean’s room. I went down stairs. As 1 came up agais ] gaw Nvonan opening the nursery room door. He said to McLean to go to bed or go home. He said I want to go home. Noonan told me to put him out. I said all right, and tuld him to come and put on his shoes, and he started to put on his shoes. I helped him. This was about four o’clock. Noonan said to McLean, yeu are disturbing the house. Nvonan laid no violent hands upen him. I could not say if McLean was sober. He could speak, but said very little. IL wené cown stairs He followed me. 1! opened the beck door. He walked out. I went out with him. { called the dog. He came back a few steps.. 1 Jet the dog in. Mclean then walked towards the rail- way. I had no keys to the front dvor, that | is why I let him out the bask door, I first | heard of his being missing on Monday, Jerry told me Dan Stewatt was down jouk- ing for him. The morning I let him out was Sunday morning. I went home Mon- | day morning before Noonan left. He was home an hour and a half, and came back to | Summerside with a load of Hay. I went to Nugnan’s, My wife told me the man was missing. Nvonan was not there then, but eame aboutdark. The first time | saw Noonan he did not speak abour McLean. The next time J saw him we spoke about him being missing. 1 don’t remember what he said. Several asked me about the man. Gardiner said nothiag about what woke him up. Noonan told me that Mclean was trying to get in- to the room next to the nyrsery. Nancy McDonald was in that room. She made no outery that | heard. 1 think the man mis- toos the bed-roum door fur the door to go out. Mr Noonan said he thought the, man was trying to get home. I was up in the morning before six o'clock, and yoke Annie McDonald up. Dr. Gillis came there about 7 o'clock. My wife was oe.

MeLean had dis clothes on when he was at the nursery door, but his boots were in the bed rooi. 1 heard no cross words between him = and Noonan. 1 did not see McLean im com pany with anyone else. | would not swear if Gardner was in the bed-room when | first saw McLean.

Montaevr Farrow (sworn).—! live in Summerside. I remember Saturday, the lith. I saw McLean inthe evening at Muttart’s. He was eating oysters. He asked me if I would have some. I said that was what I came after. { came up to the Y. M. C. A. corner with him on my way home. I could not say he was drinking. I don’t know if he said he was going home.

Nancy McDonatp, servant at Noonan’s (sworn) —L re.aember Saturday, the 11th inst. I did not know McLean. | saw him that night when they were taking him up- stairs, about helf-pas: ten. I heard Suuday afternoon that he could not be found. M1), Noonan and some men were talking abvut it. Ithink Dan McDonald was there. | heard them say McLean was lust. 1 did not ask who was at my door after MeLeau wentout. I heard Noonan go off to his bed. Gardiner was there all night. He went home on Monday. He was there ail day Sunday. Annie McDonald sleeps in vneof the reoms. Some nights she sleeps

with Mrs. Sherry. Nvonan went to Bedeque on Monday after dinner. de came back the night before last. Annie

was talking about the missing man after he was lost. Annie and I saw him before he went to bed. ~He was inthe room sitting down. Noonan and Sherry were with him. They said they found him out in the yard I was in the kitchen allthe evening. |! was inthe room off where the man slept Noonan said to him, ‘* You berter keep quiet.” I heard no sound of scuffling. Annie McDonatp (sworn)—I remember the llth, Saturday. { did not know Me- Lean till last Saturday. I saw him lying in Noonan’s back dining room. Sherry was with him. I saw him move and he did not speak. I was there about five minutes. Nancy was in the ball. I saw her when I went out into the kitchen, and then went up the back stairs and into the parlor iu the front of the house. I slept in one of the front rooms opposite the parlor across the hall. Gardiner slept in the room next. 1 stayed in the parlor with Mrs, Sherry till 12 o'clock. 1 went to bed but did not sleep much. J heard a disturbance in the house. I was awake. It was Gardiner’s dog I heard. He was barking. He was up stairs. I did not hear Noonan talking, avd did not hear till morning that the man went out through the night. William Noou- aa told me to come here to tell what 1 knew about the missing man. ‘J dont’ remember Noonan telling me anything on Sunday or Monday.
