Contempt of Court Case Dismissed

,PERCE. Que., (GP)-Mr. Jus- tice Gerard Lacroix has dismissed a defence petition for a contempt of court action against an Ameri- can magazine. He attacked maga- zines that print article: which may prejudice juries in murder cases. Defence for Wilbert Cof- fin, accused of killing one of three bear-hunters from Pennsyl- vhnla. had asked that the maga- zine True Detective be held in contempt for publishing facts not admitted as evidence in a cor- oner's inquest or in Colfinls pre- liminary hearing.

Judge Lacrolx there is no proof any of the jurors at Coffin's trial read the article, published in December, 1953. For this reason, the court would take no action against Can- adian distributors of the periodi- cal.

Like most pioneer founda- tions of learning St.Dunstan's had a feeble infancy and a slow, wor- risome growth. Tbere were times when survival, itself, was a notable achievement. A strong fibre of un- mortality must have been in its constitution to withstand all with- ering forces, because, in spite penury, frequent pessimism and occasional opposition, it gradually took firm root and flourished. it owes its greatness to many build- ers, particularly to its teaching staff and its rectors."

MacKenzlc as demonstrated in the post-war financial appeal to which "the good people of Prince Edward Island responded with amazing generosity." This had brought the college to full fruition by erecting new buildings: "A great feat. of management for it ushered in a new era of progress and brought renewed life to faculty and etu- denta alike".

David Doyle, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ambrose Doyle, Pownal street. RA- cently the band has taken part in competitions in several parts of Eastern Canada. They won a first place at Antlgonish; first at Max- vllle. ont.: second at Rouridhill, 0nt.; first at Ladentown, N.Y.. and two first places at Dutton, Ont.. where performing as a lB' band they took a first prize from the A' band.

All members of the band are tradesmen in the service and all serve in the band on a volunteer basis. They have their own tartan, an R.C.A.F. one which is specially registered in Edinburgh. It is some- what similar in design and type to that of the Andersons.

Pipe Major of the band is A. R. Howie who has been blowing since he was 11 years old.

Another piper who entertained enjoyably last evening at the Wing club was Piper Harold Sutherland. Westville, N.8.. who is here on n holiday.

New Dells Provided

The City Police station has had a face lifting during the past, week with the result that five new cells have been added to the cell block. Formerly there were only four cells in Which prisoners could be con- fined and this presented a problem since, many of the inmates were required to roam in the hallway of the block. The four new cells are finished in heavy plywood with 5 heavy hardwood door on each. A In each will be the Only furnishing. The original open- ing to the confinement area has been closed and in its place. an- other entrance has been cut to the right and to the rear of the Berge- ant'a desk. Toilet facilities have also been provided outside the cell- block.

The weekly potato bulletin of the science service Laboratory states:

"Although only a small increase in the number of potato fields in- fected with late blight has been noted during the past.week. the situation. nevertheless, must be regarded in a serious light. The weather, characterized by hllh humidity. heavy night dawn, and scattered showers, is exceptionally favourable for the development of the disease. and may, unless a change occurs soon, usher in a severe epidemic. The fields should be protected by frequent applica- tions of fungicides. Growers who are not treating their plantings, or those who treat at infrequent in- tervals, may be h ilding up troub- les for themselves, and endanger- lng the crops of their neighbours. Aphid populations are building up very rapidly and in some cases they are causing severe damage to the foliage. DDT 50 per cent wet.- table powder is not satisfactory for aphids, but the 25 per cent emulsion, 1 quart to 100 gallons, will give a fair control. Malathlon wettable powder or emulsifiablc liquid will effectively control aph- ids, but it is not satisfactory for flea beetles which are now build- ing up the second brood. Where aphids and flea beetles are num- erous it would be wise to use both malathion and DDT in the spray.
