Compliments Passing

We entirely agree with the Pioneer that,—

“The community is thoroughly enough saturated with politics without mixing it up with their religious beliefs. We consider the miserable whine raised by newspapers because a few more persons eating Govern- ment salt happen to belong to one denomin- ation more than another, the meanest and most contemptible of political dodges. ”

It is very pleasing to know from the Pioneer that the appointment of the Hon. A. A. Macdonald “is not likely to be unpopular ;” for this may be considered equivalent to an admission that it is likely to be very popular.

We don't agree with the Pioneer on many things, but we agree in these.

An Acknowledgment.

THe EXAmINeR’s acknowledgments are due, aud are respectfully tendered, to the Patriot for the modicum proof it affords of the truth of what we stated, viz., that the Liberal-Conservative Party did not enter into any conspiracy to deprive the electors of Queen’s County of their votes. The Patriot quotes a letter from Mr. Brecken, which shows that he and his solicitor at least, had nothing whatever to do with any such conspiracy.

This, so far as it goes, is thankworthy; and we are thankful.

On the other hand, no evidence has yet been proffered in support of the Patriot's charge. For this also we are thankful, the more so, as their is no evidence to proffer.

The Provincial Exhibition, 1884.

Tre Provineial Exhibition will be held on the 8th and 9th of October next, at Charlottetown. The Board has voted $1,500 in cash prizes, and quite a number of special prizes will be offered. The owners of the celebrated horse Barrister, has placed at the disposal of the Board the sum of $50 to be given in prizes to the best stock sired by that horse. The owners of other imported horses will, do doubt, follow their good example. Special prizes will also be offered in several other classes, notice of which will appear in due time. The Board will cause suitable sheep sheds, and covering for farm implements, and carriages, to be erected. Several other improvements are contemplated, which will tend to make the General Exhibi- tion for this year more attractive than any of its predecessors.

Better Butter.

Iv our Island farmers desire to know how Cork butter commands a hundred and forty shillings per 112 lbs., when best Canadian will bring only a hundred they will do well to read carefully the following discription of Mr. T. J. Clancey's butter-factory, at Cork :—

“The butter is received fresh from the dairies, and is brought in and prepared in the evening, and at night so as to avoid all exposure to heat. The greatest neatness and care are observed in all the processes of its preparation, every minute detail being provided for, so that the butter shall not suffer in its quality or keeping pro- perties. The first care is with regard to selecting for preserving, for which pape the butter must be the produce of land not over rich. That of good, sound, stiff land, has the best keeping qualities, and in no part of the world, we believe, can there be found a district more suitable both in climate and in the charactr of its pastures for making such a product than the district from which the supplies of this fac- tory are drawn.” Next as to manipulation, the butter has to be thoroughly freed from milk, but this must be done without over-handling or too much working, which would injure the grain. ‘‘It is in this pro- cess,” the correspondent states, ‘‘and in the packing into tins, that Mr. Clancey’s system and appliances are most perfect. The butter is by them made to form one solid, homogeneous body, completely filling the tins without crevices, and it is of uni- form make, colour, and body through-

out. The tin-plates used are the very finest charcoal plates, cost- ing more than double the price at

which inferior tin could be purchased. These insure a perfect coating of tin inside the can, so that at no part shall the iron come in contact with the butter. To such particularity is this carried that even the cut-edges of the cans are re-tinned after the ean is formed and before filling it with butter. It is then hermetically closed, with only one seam at the closing edge, thus giving the greatest security from leakage or air holes.”

Editorial Notes.

—It is now stated that the Canadian Pacific Railway will be completed and in operation from ocean to ocean by October of next yaer.

—The President of a Steamship Line in the United States writes to say that he would be able and happy to forward any number of passengers to the Island, if only we had good hotel accommodation aod a good water supply. But till we have these requisites he would not think of doing so.

—We beg to inform the Pioneer that THe Examiner's reference to Hon. Mr. Lefurgey’s “golden shipyard” was made in no offensive sense, and to express the hope that Mr. Lefurgey will continue to make money out of it, to the beuetit of Summerside and the Province for many yeats. The Pioneer apparently forgets that the award to which it refers was made by the Courts of the Province, and it statement that it was a rascally piece of jobbery, is hard on no Courts.

How, They Do it.

Ah, Sin, and the almond-eyed celestials in general wust look to their laurels. Some of our Charlottetonians, as the Yankees would say, ‘‘ beat them all hollow.” Letusexplain: It is well-known that the Dominion Alliance agents have for some months been vigilant in the matter of subpcenaing, through legal machinery, even well-dressed and seemingly respectable people, in Scott Act prosecutions, when the parties have been seen emerging from places ‘‘suspect,’”’ and carefully wiping the ‘‘moisture’ from immaculate mous- tachios or well-trimmed beard. To be sum- moned before magistrates to tell all they know about the refreshments dispensed in the places referred to, is not only deroga- tory to the respectability of the parties, bat is likewise dangerous. In the first place it smirches somewhat the character to be known as a frequenter of many of the places where ‘‘tangle-leg” is imbibed ; and, again, it is dangerous, as we have already said, in many ways. To tell the square, honest truth before the courts brings down the ire of the den-keeper on the unfortunate witness, and the opprobrious epithet “informer” is fastened upon him; to prevaricate is to win the con- tempt of good citizens; to give false testi- mony leaves opportunity for actions for perjury, as comrades in drinking bouts may testify to the truth and thus leave the falsifier in a bad plight. Verily those who wished to ‘‘wet their whistle’ have had a hard time of it. But for ‘‘ways that are dark,” the heathen Chinese is not alone peculiar. To avoid the disagreeable results we have briefly alluded to, a new Secret

Order has been established. We have dubbed it **How They me. 7h? This is not, of course,

the true generic name of the new society, but some of the students at the Prince of Wales College may easily translate it into Latin or Greek, and perhaps those already initiated may adopt the classical term as a fitting name for the new Order. We are not among the initiated, but we propose to show ‘‘How They Do It,” as far as possible. It is not our purpose to point out any pariicular locality where those of the Order operate. We will say, en passant, that it is Queen Street and its invirons. Two or more of the initiated may, while walking up or down the street, be suddenly taken with inordinate thirst. After agreeing upon upon what liquid will best alleviate their arid condition, they resort to the secret code of signals, with which all members of the new order are made fully acquainted. For instance, if they conclude that ‘‘Old Tom” would suit their care, they would elevate one of the digits of the left hand perpendicularly in the air, in an unosten- tatious manner, but sufficient to catch the eye of a party on the look-out. The pedes- trians at once proceed to some place ‘‘above suspicion,” and are immediately followed by a messenger who carefully unfolds a bottle of ‘Old Tom” from a wrapper, and departs with a cash equivalent. Ii the thirsty select ‘‘Otard” or ‘‘Hennessy,” they raise up two fingers; if their condition de- mands ‘‘Old Rye” then three digits are pointed to the heavens; and if nothing but **Old Jamaica” will abate the aridity, then four fingers are elevated in a beseeching attitude, and the wished-for liquids are im- mediately forthcoming, but never less than a bottle at a time '

Sixty Millions in Dividends.

AN IMMENSE SUM OF MONEY PUT INTO CIR- CULATION—WHAT THE RAILROADS PAID.

Interest and dividends on all manner of bonds and stock came due yesterday to be paid in this city." Fully $10,000,000 also came due in Boston, and certainly as much more in Philadelphia. Yesterday began the fiscal year of nearly all the railroads and other corporations, and a vast number of them were paying quarterly or semi- annual interest or dividends. Formerly the amount of this class of obligations com- ing due on July 1, was larger than now, but of recent years many ‘comnanies have adopted other dates of payment, and this distributes the burden more evenly over the year. The interest on the United States 4 per cent. 1907 bonds which came due yesterday amounted to $7,587,725, and on the cur- rency sixes in aid of Pacific road, $1,038,- 705, making a total of $9,316,430. Fully nine-tenths of this will be paid at the sub- treasury in this city, but the demand yes- terday trom holders of bonds was very slow and only a smal! amount was actually paid out. In addition to this a large amount of interest on city, county and state bonds be- came due. All the trust companies were actively engaged in distributing the vast interest which came due on railroad secur- ities. Many of the banks were also paying semi-annual dividends. Among these were the liuporters and Traders,’ which is pay- ing a semi-annual dividend of 7 per cent. : the Bowery bank, one of 6 per cent.: the Chatham bank, one of 5 per cent.; the Wall street bank, 3 per cent.; the Mercan- tile, 4 per cent.; the Bowery savings bank, 4 per cent., and many others declared divi- dends of equal amount. on interest. The Denver and Rio Grande did not pay its maturing coupons. The amount now is $655,917. President Love- joy declined to make any statement in regard to the matter, and the only expla- nation given for the default was the very simple one that the road failed to earn the interest charges. The West Shore, which is already in the hands of receivers, default- ed on the $1,250,000 semi-annual interest on its $50,000,000 first mortgage bonds. The Wabash made default on all of its bonds, and those of the roads under its control. Receiver Humphrey states that arrangements are making to meet the coupons on all these bonds. Default was also made on the $201,600 semi-annual on the $6,720,000 of Texas and Pacific New Orleans division first. The latter, however, were being brought by the Missouri Pacific at their face to be held in the same way as the $576,000 of June coupons on the east- ern division second mortgages bought by the Missouri Pacitic a month ago, viz., as a lien prior to the first mortgage. A Short Temperance Lecture.

As Jefferson, Ind., State Prison, on Wednesday night, Col. Robert M. Good- win committed suicide by taking poison. Years ago he was arising young lawyer, @ brilliant man, of good family, and very much liked. He had served with dis- tinction in the war, and won his way from a Lieutenancy to aColoneley. But he took to drink and ran down so rapidly that his friends placed him in an insane asylum to be treated for alcholism. He was released as cured in April, 1880, and one of the first things he did when he got out was to follow his eldest brother, Dr. John Goodwin, and shoot him. For this he was sentenced to the penitentiary for life. Great efforts had been made to get him released, but the court of last resort declare? that voluntary drunkenness was no excuse for crime, and that when de- lirium was pleaded as a defense for crime it must be shown that the delirium was on when the crime was committed. This result led Goodwin to take poison. Here is the text for a temperance lecture.

Another derivative from coal-tar has been produced in Germany in the shape of an explosive for mining purposes or fire- arms. This is a mixture of saltpetre, chlorate of potash, and a solid hydro- carbon, such as paraffin, asphaltum, or pitch. The solid ingredients are powdered and intimately mixed, and the mass is then treated with a liquid volatile hydro-carbon, such as benzine or gasoline, which dissolves the solid hydro-carbon and forms the whole into a plastic body. This cake is then roll- ed into sheets, and hardened by allowing the liquid solvent to evaporate, the product being afterwards broken up into grains of any desired size, like ordinary gunpowder. The new compound is only an explosive when confined in a close space. It pos- sesses the same density as gunpowder, and is very hard.
