A proposal that the eight affect- ed provinces join forces ‘in a new attempt to end the packlnghouse workers’ strike was made yesterday by Premier Douglas of Saskatche- wan as the Dominion-wide meat shortage continued to grow mgre serious.

This development came as the United Packlnghouse Workers of America (C.I.O.) announced in Toronto that first returns showed the strikers almost unanimously opposed to an earlier settlement bid by the Ontario Government.

The Ontario proposal is that the strikers return to Wtrrk pending conciliation -or arbitration. Union strike headquarters said the vote by workers in Toronto, Peter-bor- ough, Ont., and Prince Albert, Sash. waS 1,804 against, eight in favor.

Bread prices in Canadian cities were spiralling today after emer- gency meetings of Bakers’ Associa- tions acted on increases following the week-end remc-val oi subsidies and price control on flour.

New Evidence In Lovers’ Lane Murder Base

TORONTO. Sept. 1'1 —(CP) - Evidcnce that George Vigus and Iris Scott were strangled in an- other sectlon of the city and driv- en to west-end High Park was given police investigating the "Lov- ers' Lane" slayings today.

A young married couple, whose names were not divulged, told police that they witnessed the death-car being parked a few yards away from them in the park last Thursday and the driver got. out and walked away.

The couple came to the police after reading that police wished to question a man and a woman seen on a bench near where Vigus’ car was found with the bodies crammed into the auto-trunk.

They told police they had enter- ed the park on their motorcycle and had sat on a bench near the Howard Monument. At 2.30 a. m. the death car approached and parked on the grass a few yards away from them. The driver then got out and disappeared.

Police said that it would have been impossible for the killers to have strangled Vigus and the beau- tiful secretary and stuffed them in the trunk without being observed by the young married couple.

Police would not enlarge in re- gard to the information or descrip- tion of the man obtained from the couple.

Hospital authorities. who said the unidentified victim still was on the operating table. were un- able to say whether his condition was dangerous.

The victim was unconscious when police arrived at the Mer- chant Scamenu Club where he had been taken after the incid- ent.

Prices Board Jobs Reduced

OTTAWA, Sept. 17 —(Speclal)— Williams T. Wilson, deputy chair- man of the Prices Board, told The Guardian today that personnel of the staff which had a wartime peck of 5.700 men and women had been reduced to 1.900 as of September 15 and that 500 ‘more employes of the Board at different points across the country would lose their jobs during the next six weeks as the result oi the recent decontrol of flour, leather, textiles arid can- ned goods.

“Oil-r staff is being out to rock bottom from Prince Edward Island to Victoria," Mr. Wilson said. "There is an unavoidable miniznum of men and women required at head-office, and we need about 1,- 000 men and women to administer rent control. Then we have some 624 ration boards, and a. considerable staff is needed to supervise sugar rationing and the control of meats and coarse grains."

The cut of 3,000 employees of WPTB follows that of 1.200 men and women of the Department cf Reconstruction which is gradually going out of existence as it com- pletes its work, and of many thous- ands of civilian employees of the armed services. During the past year also, several hundred men and women in the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, many of t em veterans of World War II. ve been let out on account of their positions having been abolished.

Trade Board Discusses Railway Car Shortage, Road £9’ Bridge Projects

The proposed direction of the Charlottetown - Borden highway, car shortage, the strike situation as it affects the farmers of the Province, and the prospect of installing s dial sys- tem of telephone communication in Charlottetown were the prin- clpal subjects discussed at last night's quarterly meeting of the Charlottetown Board of Trade.

The president, Captain Carl Burke. M.B.E., presided.

Mr. B. Graham Rogers, acting as secretary in the absence of Mr. J. Walthen Gaudet, read a. communication from the Hon. G. H. Barbour, Minister of Public Works. stating that the Govern- merit did not know what direction the new Borden road would take.

Mr. LII‘. Beaten said he believ- ed every business man in Char- lottetown would support a re- commendation to the Government that the road from Tryon should go across the Bito Bridge on its way to Borden rather than ap- proach the ferry terminal via Searletown. The road via the Bito Bridge, Mr. Beaten said, would cut about four miles off the dist- ance between Borden snd Char- lottetown.

Mr. F. W. Hyndman, P. B. Pal- mer, Major T. E. MacNutt, and others supported the Bito Bridge route.

Favors Shortest Bouts

Mr. W. Chester S. McLure, M. P., said he favoured the shortest possible road between Charlotte- town and Borden as he favoured the earliest possible construction of the Brighton Bridge.
