You may wonder why more is not heard about the "electric knife" which was so popular Just a few years ago.

As a platter of fact the electric knife is actually being used more to-day than ever before, but it is not used in all M585 Nqllmllfl surgery, but only in certain selected cases. In these selected cases it is certainly of greet value.

Prof. K. H. Pauer. profane of mlrgiery at the University of Breslau has operations performed by 818cm!- surgery, as the electric knife is called.

By microscopic examlnatlonc it was shown that, although the wound heals more slowly with the electric lmife than with the ordin- ary knife, and in some instances there was bleeding on the fifth day after the operation, nevertheless there were fewer cases of infection. and less shock after the OPPWUW! by the electric lmlfe. _

The question is, "What patients may be operated on better with the electric knife than by the °1d°T method?"

Was Laid Dundonald the author of the famous abjuration which was on the lips of hundreds of Can- adians thirty years BBO, "Keep both hands on the Union Jack"? Ibr many moons my Ottawa confreres credited me with being the phrase- maker. but I steadfastly disclaimed. Tmelhadpassed it ontothem on the night of July M, 1904, when the retiring general officer oom- manding was given such a. tempes- tuous send-off by the citizens of Ottawa, but I am firmly convinced t it was Col. Sam Hughes who coined the famous .

Lord Dundonald was appointed to the command of the Canadian troops on July l. 1m. and 1 first had the pleasure of meeting him at the unveiling by my little o! the monument erected gifts of thirty thousand school children of the Ottawa. Val- ley t0 the memory of the men who had died in the South African war. From that day until Lord Dun- donald left! Canada I was in close touch with him, officially and socially.

Lord Dilndonald had not been in Canada many months before he realized the difficulties of his position. From the time he as- sumed office to Dec. 31 of that same yea-r (1902), the G.O.C- visited every province of Canada. He sub- mitted a report of his tour to the mirfster, sir Frederick Borden, ac- companying it with a special one containing “a broad scheme for the improvement of the militia." This latter report; was suppressed, and thus began the friction be- tween the G.0.C. and the govern- ment.

There were frequent stories in the Canacfan press in 1903 about the misundersbanzfng which had arisen between Sir Frederick and lord Dundonald, but if anything the trouble was between Col. Pinault, deputy minister and the 0.0.0. Up to that time the rela- tions between the minister and the general officer commanding wene friendly. Indeed at a banquet in Montreal Sir Frederick described ford Dundonald as “a man of sound sense and tudaemerit wiho was
