SID ANNUAL FAT STOCK SHOW AND SALQ

The 3rd Annual Fat Stock Show and Sale held at the Exhibition Grounds Charlottetown, on Thurs- dgy, April 1st, was an outstand- mg success. Of the one hundred gnd seven (W1) animsls entered mnety-two (92) were weighed and one of these was culled because of overweight. Of the remaining ninetyone (91) entries sixty-seven 167) were considered by the cul- ling Committee to be of sufficient merit to be Judged and sold.

The Judging began at 8:15 in the morning with Mr. Frank E. Wolff. Agricultural Agent, C. P. }1_, Toronto. placing the awards. -rm. part of the Show was ex- peditiously curled out, and st 11:00 A. in. Mr. Wolff placed his hand on an Aberdeen Angus steel". owned by Eedverse Stewart of New Wiltshire, and declared this steel‘ the Grand Champion. The Reserve Grand was owned by Ful- ton Sanderson and Sons of York Point. It is interesting to note that at the 1053 Show Mr Sand- erson had the Grand Champion. and Mr. Stewart the Reserve.

Before the first animal was sold in the llfiemoon Dr. J. P. Lantz, President oi the Charlottetown Ex- hibition Association, in a few well chosen remarks referred to the rxcellent service rendered by Mr. \V_ R. Shaw. who is retiring as Deputy Minister of Agriculture. and a presentation of a tri-lite lamp with matching smoking stand was made to Mr. Shaw on behalf of the Fat Stock Association.

Mr. Claude Crasweil of North winsloe. the Auctioneer, began his sale with the Grand Champion at l.l5, and so spirited was the bid- ding that the sixty-seventh ani- mal had gone through the sale ring by 8.00 o'clock. Mr. Craswell ieceived warm praise from the l-xhibitors for his handling of the Sale. The Grand Champion steer was knocked down to the T. Eaton Company, Limited. Moncton. for ninety-nine cents i99cl per pound. This Company also bought the Reserve Champion for which they psid fifty eight cents tsilci per pound. The average price received for the sixty-seven animals was 26.44 per pound. This figure was very satisfactory to the breeders concerned. and plans are already llndcr way for a bigger and bet- ter event in 1955

Junior Clubs

The Junior club members from the North River Beef Club showed six animals at the Fat. Stock Show and Sale held last WPCK. This group of six was topped by a very smooth Aberdeen Angus steer owned by Temple Stewart of North Wiltshlre. This steer was followed by those owned by Dougie; Jewell, Elva Jewell. Kenneth Jewell. Wil- lard MacPhail. and Vera Jewel. these young people deserve credit 'or the condition and manner in which they showed their animals. as well as their own conduct in the ring. At the time of the sale in the afternoon it was mention- ed that Vera Jewell had been stricken with polio. and two years ago was not able to walk. She has made a marvelloug-«comeback. and when she led her steer into the ring to be sold it brought forty- live and one-half cents H5‘/:0) per pound. and was sold 90 03"‘ ads Packers. No doubt these boys and girls will be back next IP87 and take part in the Show and Sale.

Coccldioais

Coccidiosis in poultry presents _.-l serious problem especially this time of year. It is a disease caused by a small one-celled parasite. There are eight different species of this parasite which may ef- fect chickens. The other six types of the infection in chickens do not ,-.-suit in such A high mortality. hilt they cause sufficient damage ~o warrant the adoption of some 'f‘medial measures as soon as they have been diaimosed.

Transmission

when the pnrlslte eggs are passed they are not infective but require about forty-eight hours under the favorable conditions of moisture and warmth to develop into the infective stage. If these infective parasites are swallowed by a susceptible bird they pass throulh various other stages within the birds body, during whlch time the damage is done. The parasites have the abilities to "Produce in enormous numbers. Each one is considered capable of Producing 900,000 decendants.

Symptoms

These depend upon the age of the bird attacked, the species of ooccidis infecting the bird, the number of infective parasites in-

bird. The disease seldom occurs in chicks or poultry younger than two weeks of age. Most of the worst outbreaks occur when the birds are four to eight weeks old. Bloody dropping: are seen when the chicks are affected with the cecal type of the disease, and to ii considerable extent in one of the other types. Chickens badly affected with either of these types die very soon after symptoms are first noticed. and quite frequent- ly the mortality rate is high.

It is important to have an ac- curate diagnosis made. This can- not be done without making a microscopical examination of the cecal and intestinal contents.

Due to the fact that the par- asites are exceptionally resistant to most of the common disin- fectants it is extremely difficult. if not impossible. to completely free the poultry house of all parasites when cleaning and dis- infecting. Usually serious out- breaks with consequent high mortality can be prevented if the quarters are kept dry.

Various methods of treatment with drugs have been tried and several of these have proven suc- cemfui. If any one has found that a certain treatment has pre- vented serious losses year a!ter year, I would not suggest that he change to some other form of medication. some of the sulfa drugs. especially sulfa-metha.zine_ sulfasuxlriine and sulfaqulnoxalinc have been used cxtensiwly and found of definite value in the treatment of flocks affected with Goccldiosis, one that can be ad- ministered in the drinking water is prefercd to one that has to be mixed in the mash. Sick chickens or poults will drink when they will not eat.

No hard and fast rules can be laid down regarding the number of day; a flock should be treat- ed with Sulfa drugs. and it is ad- visnhle before commencing treat- ment to discuss the situation with someone who thoroughly tinder- stands their use.

The birds should not be flushed at any time while they are being treated with Sulfa drugs_ If the drug is administered in the drink- ing water no other liquid should be given to the birds while they Ire receiving the treatment.
