By Presbyterian Church in Canada

TORONTO (CP)——R.etentlon of the death penalty for such crimes as murder was approved Saturday during sessions of the 80th general assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Canada.

The motion was adopted from the report of the board of evan- gelism and social action submitted to the assembly. The report also called for state action to relieve unemployment and condemned any extension of legalized lotteries.

The statement. on the death pen- alty was introduced by Rev. E. C. Mecullagh of Durinville. Oni:., and said "We would affirm the right of the civil magistrate to impose the death sentence for crimes like malicious and deliberate homicide.
