The nun was Waiter Hunt: the gadget was the safety pin.

Hunt never knew his invention rney luv. antedated hirn st least 4.000 years (some say since the Bronse Age, mosh than 2,000 years '10.) but nobody had ever tried to patent it. and he was given ps- tent No. 0%.

"Hunt had a good mind, but very little practical sense," ssid Joseph Nathan Kane, a writer who digs up historical characters and brings them back to life.

According to Kane, one day in 1848, Hunt wanted lid to Pl! a debt. H, rilmmssed around in bis shop until he found a piece of brass wire about eight inches long. Then he went to see a manu- facturer named Richardson, who looted tho gadget over carefully. "I'll give you one hundred dol- lars cash." he slid finally.

“All right," said Hunt.

Richardson peeled off $100 in small bills.

Dr. L W. Shaw Addresses Queen Square ‘School ,

Dr. Shaw. speaking on ‘lhurs- day afternoon gave a very practic- sl and educational talk on Now- foundlsnd. Having lived there for ten years, five of which he served the people as Supervisor of Education, Dr. Shaw was able to speak from personal experience‘.

Demonstrating on s map, Dr. Shaw explained that because of the difficulty of communications snd the English fish traders. who did not want settlement since this would hamper tl-nr‘ markets, agri- culture hasn't had_ much oi s chance Ito develop. ,

m. Shaw stated that the principal industries were fishing, lumbering and mining, with the greet majority of the people be- ing employed st fishing.

Speaking on education, Dr. Shaw described a new system used to school the children of the railway workers, by moans of s “Coach Classroom."

A note of interest is that due to the communion“ system the people of English, Irish, Scotch Irish and Scotch than the pscp1e_ of those respective countries, Dr. Shaw also mentioned.
