Of this number, Mr. Thomas Drummond shipped over 5,000. Sheep raising is an important and profitable branch of stock- raising, and itis assuming larger propor- tionsevery year. Sheep are easily cared, easily housed and fed, and are, at all times, a cash article. Our farmers are beginning to realize that there is money in sheep, and we expect to see them engage more exten- sively in raising such valuable stock. The maraet for them is unfailing, and excellent prices prevail almost without exception.— Agriculturist. cccapenciiibiti CaNapIaAn Catrie.—A recent London cable te the Toronto Empire says that some of the agricultural journals there are agitating against the admission of Canadian cattle, as a counterblast tothe American agitation for the admission of United States cattle. It is argued that the admission of Canadian cattle is ruinous to British live stock interests, and that the Government is urged to withdraw the concession to Canada, thus placing Canada on an equality with the States. The Live Stock Journal says that the Canadian concession was never intended to refer to tat cattle, the importation of which has now grown into a regular trade. Unless the cattle are slaugh- tered when debarked, the present trade must bring disease and disaster. The friends of Canada point, however, to Canada’s freedom from disease and the absence of all proof of Canadian fat or spare cattle bringing disease here.

It is officially announced that Duncan Melntyre has been invited by the joint committee of the Grand Trunk and Cana- dian Pacific shareholders to undertake the settlement of the difficulties between the two companies.
It is stated that the Government is negotiating with Bedson for the purchase of his Buffalo herd tor the Roc ky Mountain Park. Hon. Mr. Dewdney favors the acquisition of the herd if they can be ob- tained at a reasonable figure.
An Important Judgment.
MONTREAL, Dec. 15.
vhnson gave judgment to-day in the case of the Herald va. the Northern Insurance Company. When the Herald building was burned in 1887, it was insured in ten offices, nine of which paid up. The risk in the Northern for $3,000 expired on the date of the fire, which took place at 7 p.m. The Herald claimed that the policy extended to midnight, which contention was sustained with interest and cost.

The Panama Canal Matter.

Most of the papers here consider the re- jection of the Panama Canal Bill as a mis- take, and describe the vote of the Ckamber as pusillanimous, while others de- clare it will prove fatal to the Republic. When M. DeLesseps heard of the rejection of the bill his face blanched and his hands became ice cold. He soou recovered his usual calmness, however, and spoke sadly of wreck and of fearful disaster tu himself and thenation.

Opium Seizure. SANDBEACH, Mich., Dec. 16. United States officials seized $20,000
worth of smuggied opium near here, on Friday night, after a long tramp in the woods, and despite a fight with oue gang. The principal smuggler is Capt. H. Durant, who was arrested last August for smuggling, but released because of lack of evidence. Durant is head of a gang in this locality in the service of a syndicate in Canada.
