Theatre Society productions begin

UPEI Theatre Society presents three one-act plays

his weekend, the theatre society will be 1 presenting three one-act plays. This year’s plays are ‘‘The Golden Fleece’’, “‘Waiting Room’’, and ‘‘The Sandbox’’. The plays will be performed on November 19, 20, and 21 a5 the Steel Recital Hall.

‘*The Sandbox’’, by Edward Albee, consid- ers what would happen if you put grandma in a sandbox and left her there to die: the absurd, of course!

The play is directed by Craig Blair, who is also acting in one of the other productions, ‘‘The Golden Fleece’’.

The cast of ‘‘The Sandbox’’ includes Rebecca Vanderheyden as Mommy, Phillip MacEachern as Daddy, Jennifer Godfrey as Grandma, Sean McIntyre as the Young Man, and Kadre Kass as the Musician.

“*Waiting Room’’ is about a group of people in the waiting room of the ‘‘Free Choice Clinic’’ - a euthanasia clinic. Sound interesting?

Waiting Room features the talents of:

Carolyn Whalen as Mrs. Clark, Jennifer McDonald as Emily, Craig Ramsey as Jerome, Keir Malone as Mr. Way, and Catherine Timmons as Ms. Brunton.

It is directed by Sharon Leighton, who is also the author of the play. Ms Leighton wrote the play last year in response to the controversy over euthanasia in the media. This forty minute production is something ofa first for her, as she has only done smaller productions in the past. When asked if she was nervous about present- ing her play, Ms. Leighton responded, ‘‘A play is not finished until people see it.’’

After catching glimpses ofrehearsals, I would recommend that everyone turn out for these plays, support the theatre society and have a really entertaining evening for only a few dol- lars. Showtimes are at 8:00 PM each night. Tickets are five dollars for students and eight dollars for faculty and general public.

Maligning MAPUS

Dear Editor,

I am writing in regards to a recent newsletter that has been circulated to Mature and Part-time students from MAPUS. The newsletter sug- gests that the Student Union is somehow failing to represent the concerns and needs of mature students on this campus. I fail to seemuch lobby effort from MAPUS. Recently, the hiring prac- tices of the Student Union came under review and I understand that no Mapus executive mem- ber or student council rep cared enough to lobby for part-time students, or even show up at the meeting.

I concede that the short courses they sponsor are very helpful, but I wonder what is really being done more than that. I wonder where the fees that are presently being collected on behalf of MAPUS are going? Asamember of MAPUS, I would be very interested in seeing the expen- ditures and revenues for the past couple of years. Until MAPUS can prove to me that they are an organization that is truly working on behalf of mature and part-time students, I will throw my lot in with the Student Union, who work for ALL students.

Number one fan

Hi, I am Michelle, a 26-year-old freshman in Business. So if there are a lot of grammatical, spelling and structure errors, please excuse them and consider the source. Not to say that all business students are as ignorant to English as I. Don’t get me wrong, I would love to possess the ability to express myself in writing with such a style as yours.

The first time I picked up a copy of the X- Press, I read the entire paper, cover to cover. At the beginning of this year I thought that I would miss getting a copy every week since I am here on Fridays and not Thursdays. But to my sur- prise I have never been deprived ofan issue, and there have always been plenty left.

Since reading your editorial in the Novem- ber 4 issue, I now realize that not everyone is enriching their lives as lam. The X-Press is very informative, touching on a wide variety of issues from different points of view and inter- ests.

On a final note, I love the publication and commend you all on your hard work and dedi- cation every week. I am an avid and dedicated reader who hopes to read the paper for years to come. Keep up the excellent work. By the way, I did not reply to the survey on sex, not that it offended me, it’s just that I felt there were more deserving surveys I would rather respond to.
