The recent experiences of a Parisian lady of position may serve as a usefis warning to some of my readers who re- side abroad. The lady. in question re- turned from a ball one night much ear- lier than she had given her vants reason to expect, and to her consterna- tion found three members of her house- hold missing—the nurse, the housemaid and—the baby! Greatly terrified, she rushed to the concierge to make in- quiries, and after some prevarication the man informed her that the two ser- vants, fancying their mistress would not return for some hours, had gone to a notorious dancing place, taking the baby with them, and there the lady would be certain to find all three “quite safe and scund.”

Elizabeth Palmer Peabody the first to introduce kin- dergartens into this country. She lec- tured on the subject in many places, irculated books far and wide, and did much to recommend Froebel’s work ta the public. Directly or indirectly she has been the promoter of all the kin- dergarten work that has been under- taken up to the present time. Remark- able as she was for literary and edu- cational gifts and unselfish and large minded as were her plans for the pub- lic good, she pass-d away without any memorial that was befitting te her work or that gave her friends an oppor- tunity to testify their appreciation of it. It is now proposed to establ’sh in this city an Elizabeth Peabody House, which will be a kindergarten settlement similar in plan to college settlements. The plan is to take a suitable house tn some poor and crowded quarter and to have a group of eight or ten kinder- gartners, normal students and teachers in residence. They will conduct a kin dergarten, and through acquaintance with the children enter into friend!y and helpful relations with the people of

B.
