French Naval Officers Reach Record OceaiL Depth

DAKAR, West Africa. (Reuters)- Two French naval officers piloted e. bathyscaphe Monday to the sea floor more than 2'.'2 miles below the surface of the Atlantic ocean. deeper than men has even gone before.

The pair. nutled in a steel sphere with no cable attached, plunged under the surface 160 miles west of Dakar at 10:09 am. 5:00 am, EST and pioneered the depths for more than five hours.

The explorers, Cmdr. George Hunt and his engineer, Omdr. Pierre Willm, descended to 13,281 feet below sea level, exceeding by more than 3,000 feet the record set by Prof. Auguste Piccard last sum- mer in the Mediterranean sea.

Undersea Mysteries

After Hunt and Willm left he- hind the last trace of sunlight filtering through the miles of sea I'll-0!. they switched on powerful surchlights and peered through I porthoie into mysteries never be- fore seen by man.

Opposition Parties Call For Special Measures

Two of them-the Pnogreuive Conservatives and the CGF-pro- posed resolutions in the Commons that conflicted with each other but which technically were mo- tlons of wan-t-of-cbrifidence in the government on the issue.

The Progressive Conservatives asked that a parliamentary com- mittee investigate the unemploy- ment situation and recommend short-and-loiig-term methods dealing with it.

The COF motion, declaring there is a serious unemployment situa- tion in Canada, sought undefined "immediate action" by the gov- ernment to ”prevent further eco- nomic distress."

The motions were launched dur- mg a debate on unemployment- the first in years-which was touched off by figures indicating a rising total of Jobless in Canada during the winter.
