A SAD CASE.

Sin.—There are come cases in this town where, under Scott Act convictions, extreme cruelty 1e dewlt out to the offend- ers, whereas others equally guilty of violating the Jaw are allowed to go Scctt tree. At present a very poor mother of five children is incarcerated in the common jail of Charlottetown, being convicted of vielation of the Scott Act—the youngest, a little child 3 monthe old, is with its mother in jail, the next oldest is about 2 years, and the oldest ofthe family is but seven years old. These children are huddled together in a house without any one to take care of them. Their father is obliged to leave his children thus alone in order to earn at day’s work what. will supply them with the necessaries of life. This ia indeed a pitiful case, and one which should eal] forth the sympathies of Christian men and women. ‘There area large number of Scott Act violators in this city today who deal out to their unfor- tunate victims more poisonous liquors in one day than this unfortunate woman has done in all her life.

We hear that Mr. Robert F. Irving is now employed in the office of the agent of Marine and Fisheries in this city. Itis said that his duties have special reference to the fisheries.

Dr. J. H. McLeod, arrived in the city from Springfield, Ill, today, on his way to his home in Murray Harbor. Dr. McLeod expects to remain in his native proviucs until July. The Dr. was a reporter on the Gnardian fora short time after its establishment as a daily. His many friends are glad to see him.

Mr. Geo. Mason died at Southport on Tuesday evening. Mr. Mason has reside in Charlottetown for some time past, and was on a visit to the homestead when the summons came. During the past two years Mr. Mason has suff:red three paralytic shocks, the third of which occurred this day week and from which he never re- covered. He leaves a widow six sons and two daughter’s who have our sympa‘hy.

The Sussex correspondent of the St. John Telegraph writes: The Rev. Mr. Mahon still continues very ill, although hls condition is not absolutely hopeless. He is yet very weak,and the physicians are in constant attendance upon him. Elis very many friends, and especially bis own congregation, by whom he is held in the highest possible love and esteem, earnestly hope for his early recovery.

THE JUBILEE SOUVENIRS.

@ A well known man of literary tastes said the other day that he was making a collec- tion of Jubilee souvenirs. Porice Covrt.—Tbere were four Scott Act cases onthe docket this forevoon, George Offer, charged with a third infrac-

tion, was sentenced to two months’ im- prisonment. John Bolger, convicted of a

second offence, was fined $100 and $9.90 costs. The summonses against William E. Barron and Hugh Hennessey were dis- missed. Ebenezer Wheatley, for allowing a nuisance to exist on his premises, was fined $2 or 10 dys,

Tue Sun Lire Assctrance Company of Canada Head office Montreal, has just issued its twenty-tifth anuual report.

The life applications received in 1896 were 10,898 for assurances to the amoun of $11,110,292.19. Of these 10,161, cover- ing $9,741,258.38 were accepted, and policies issued therefor, the balance being declined or not completed. The assurances on which premiums were actually paid in cash before the close of tbe year were 6,519 for $7,468,281.57. This new busi- ness is not onlv larger than that secured by the Company in any previous year of its history, but also much larger than that of any other Canadian life company.

The policies in force on 3let Dezember last were 26.840, assuring $38,196,890 92, being an increase for the year of 4,539 policies for $3,4 41,050.67.

The tota: net premium. income was &1.650,26°.36, being an increase of $34$,~ 679.29 over the figures of the previous twelve months. The total receipts for the year, including interest and rents, were $1,886,258 00.

The assets now amount to $6,388,144 66 being an increase of ($1,622,374.13 during the year.

The total payments made to policy- holders were $512,886.86 It may be in- teresting to know that in the twenty-six years of its active history, the Company has returned to policy-bolders or bene- ficiaries $3,626,628.86. It would be diffi- cult to estimate the extent of the infiuence for good of this large amount, which has been paid chiefly to widows and orphans, or to persons in advanced age.

The above statements speak for them- selves and indicate the remarkable growth and prosperity of ihis Company. Mr. L. P. McLaughlin, of this city, is General Agent for P. E. Island for this Company, and Mr. E. R. Brow is Local Agent at Charlotteiown. Mr. M.F. Koughan bas lately been appointed ‘special agent for this Company.
