Tue most notable feature of each of the jfall exhibitions in this Province was the fruit. It was made evident that our people are rapidly prospering in fruit culture, and that cur soil and climate are eminently suitable for those varieties of fruit which are common to the Temperate Z me. Particularly noticeable was the perfection of the plums. Travelled gentlemen were heard remarking thac they had never seen better plums anywhere, In view of the undoubted excellence attainable in this |direction, many of cur farmers will, we | have no doubt, be thankful for information } concerning the best varieties of plums to }eultivate in this Province. Moors’s Artic—Medium size or below, purplish, black, thin, blue bloom, flavor {sweet and pleasant, ove of the hardiest |plums grown, tree healihy and vigorous, an early and very abundant bearer, and that nearly every year. Not fist class, not free from ‘black knot as represented, like many other things in print must be taken ‘‘cum grano salis.”

BrapsHaw —A splendid plum, tender while young, but when older hardy and productive. Fruit large, dark, violet, red, ‘flesh, yellowish, green, juicy, rich and pleasant, helding longer on tree than former and of higher quality; ripens early; first class.

Lomparbd —Beckers scarlet, comes next to Bradsiaw and one of the best, if not the best, grown for « paying plum; always gives good crops and standing market handling about the best of all; also very hardy. Tree vigorous and pruductive. Color, violet red; juicy, pleasant,guod,.

Prince En@cesert —A tine plum, good bearer, valuable for dessert and cook- ing; somewhat tender while young, becoming vigorous later on. Fruit larga, skin of deep purple sprinkled with brown dots, deep blue bloom; very good.

Mircuetson—Tree hardy in England where originated, here rather delicate; said to be free froin black knot; not 80, as it is frequently attacked by it. Fruit above medium size, skin black, dotted with few dots, thin, blue bloom, flesh, yellow, tender, juicy, sweet, good, separating from stone.

Macnum Bonum, Yettow anv Rep —Hardy, vigorous and excellent bear- ers. Fruit very large, bearing well, of large and splendid appearance; shipping and keeping well, flesh firm; good for culimary purposes; not first-class for eating, on some light, sandy svils apt to drop before mature.

Wasutnoton — Large, green plum of great s’ze and beauty, vigorous and hardy in some sections, in others not so much so; rather shy bearer, on this account not 80 profitable; flesh yellow; firm, very sweet and good when well ripened, when ripe separates from stone. Good.

JerrersoN—Very large, yellow plum, prettily streaked with red in the sun, with white bloom; one of the most beautiful of all the desert p!ums; when fully ripe it is nearly equal to the green gage, which is the standard of flavor, unsurpassable; it ripens later than the Washington; a very moderate grower; fruit, flesh, deep orange parts treely from stone; flavor of the best; although such a fine plum, it pays least of all, as it proves nut to be hardy and is a shy bearer. Very good.

Vicroria, oR SHanr’s Emperor. —A beautiful plum of tine appearance; tree vig- oreus in some sections and productive too inuch so, as some seasons the fruit is fine, then again when bearing heartily the fruit is small, fails to ripen well, and flavor is vinous. Fruit, large, bright, red spotted, with lilac, with thin bloom—it is yellowish in England in color lam told—flesh, gold- en yellow; rather coarse, and not very juicy or sugary unless well grown, but good if it is. Willsrd, the great plum grower of New York, once told me these three

the markets of New York as the pluma most unprofitable; although the finest in size and appearance, they piid least of all, as the trees proved tender, borers, troubled them most, and they winter killed, and twoformer such shy bearers. This has been my experience with them here exactly.

Tue Gueu, although sold here as a new plum, is quite an old plum in New York

(Juackenboss in every respect, is quite hardy, but has net borne sufficiently with me to tell whether it really is profitable; in New York it proves hardy and vigorous, aud an abundant bearer. It is 4 dark pur- ple plum, covered with thick blue bloom; flesh pale yellow; a little coarse, firm, juic~, sweet, not «a rich dessert plum, but reliable tor culinary and market purposes. Hungar Threatens London SIGNS OF VERY HARD TIMES FOR THE UN EMPLOYED. England must prepare for the co.ing of a terrible spectre—a great hunger will soon invade Britain. The signs of his coming are everywhere. Those whose business it is to aid others in fighting him, say that he has already gained a fvothold in London. They explain that not for many years until now, has there been genuine distress in the metropolis, due to great commiercial and economic causes. Poor and destitute there always are in large numbers, but their sufferings for a long time have been due tu individual and special causes. Thousands of skilled workmen in almost all trades are now idle through no fault of their own. The evil has grown graduilly. Attentium has not been called to it by the sudden discharge of great bodies of men Working forces have been cut down grad- ually, and the process is still going on The docks are haif deserted The textile, cloth ana printing trades are dull almost beyond precedent. A large portion of men are idle in the ship building, engineering and related trades than for many years. The situation has been growing worse for fifteen months, but in September things took a much sharper downward turn. The labor bureau of the board of trade makes a gloomy report of the situation. It is apparent already that existing re- lief machinery will not be adequate for the emergency of the coming winter. The cor- oners have investigated several cases of ac- tual death by starvation in the last month. The distress is sure to be acute and wide- spread, and there will be many pitiful tales to make Christmas a holiday more of sor- row than of gladness. The cause of all is commercial rather than financial depression. There is consid- erable imprcvement visible in financial af- fairs; capital is becoming more confilent and venturescme, and the strictly financial market is in in a distinctly better condition than a few months ago, but the commercial outlook is not encouraging. There is rea- son to fear that things will continue to go from bad to worse.
