The regular meeting of the Bloomfield Junior Farmers group was held Thursday evening, June 16th iii St. Anthony's Hall. About 30 members were present including the President, Vance Bridges. This is a veny enthusiastic group of young people who are at present making plenis for the levelling of a field to be used for sports.

Mr. Morris Deacon, Fieldman. Department of Agriculture spoke to the group and stressed the need of more tidy and attractive looking rural communities. He aaid the Junior Farmers ooull help in this by setting on example on their own farms and encouraging others to follow their example. David Pea- cock. Field-man, Department of Agriculture also ‘spoke briefly.

Freight Assistance Continues

A recent announcement from Ottawa assures farmers that the freight assistance policy will con- tinue at least for another year after July 31st. This assurance is given although there has been no money voted for it yet. Freight assistance to the farmers of this proyince means at present a sav- ing of $10.30 on every ton of coarse grains and mill feeds im- ported from the West. This will mean considerably more after the new freight increases go irito ef- fect on July 2nd.

The Federation has been press- ing the Dominion Government for some time to set up a permanent national policy with regard to this freight assistance. This is neces- sary if Eastern farmers are to have some security in obtaining their feeds and be able to plan a production program in advance. There has been nothing definite done yet but it is hoped that the current Royal Commission on Transportation will have some de- finite recommendation to make on the matter.

Local Price Spreads

Do you know that cheddar cheese. an Island farm product. contains more digestable protein per purchased pound than any other common food? One pound equals in food value 1% pounds beefsteak, 2 lbs. salmon, 3 lbs. bacon, etc. But consumers are not buying it. Why? Because the retail price is too high. At the present time. farmers are getting SZi/éc per pound at the storage. The same cheese is selling over the counter in Charlottetown .for as much as fifty cents a pound.

There is going to be a surplus. Who's to blame? It's about time the retail business men on this Island realized that the backbone of their business is the farmer's prosperity. Why not play fair?

Potato Promotion Committee

Some inquiries to the Federat- ion office recently referred to the newly appointed Potato Promot- ion Committee. As many know. this committee was set up under an amendment of last session to the Island potato disease legisla- tion. lt consists of three govern- ment officials, two dealer repre- sentatives, and three producers. with the Minister of Agriculture as chairman.

Although there was some dis- satisfaction expressed at the time

ducer representatives. everything seems to be working smoothly. Their duties are to administer the potato levy which is collected at the rate of one cent per hundred pounds on all potatoes exported from the province. used for the elimination and cleaning up of certain potato dis- eases,_for the reimbursement of growers suffering such losses, and for educational work directly con- nected with the potato industry. The committee. we believe. has worked out a very satisfactory plan for the next year.

The Federation will be working very closely with them. especially in the educational work. This will be more in the local field regard- ing storage warehouses, power ‘potato graders operated on acom- munity basis, also better market- ing and merchandising practices. Plans are being made by the com- mittee to do some publicity work and advertising of Island potatoes on export markets.

We believe that this fund. which the producers levied upon them- selves and which is collected through the dealer agencies, will be used in future in the best in- terests of our potato growers.

A True Little Story

A few years ago, a group of men in Ottawa predicted that. within four years. most of the Provinces of Canada would pass laws permitting the sale of mar- garine. The group of people a- round laughed at the possibility of such a thing. There was a law against it. Canadian people wouldn't stand for it. But they were right. There was a plan. The propaganda started about four years ago-little editorials, printed incidents here and there. As time went on. propaganda in favour of oleomargarine grew stronger and stronger.

Some of the ablest men in Can- ada who knew the real situation and the ill effects that the intro- duction of margarine would have on the country were held up to scorn because they spoke out.

Let us look at the economic side of this oleomargarine-butter question. The old agitation was to permit the importation of veg- etable oils and fats, whale and seal oil included, for the manu- facture of a cheap butter substi- tute. In many cases those in- gredients are produced by under- paid labour in other parts of the world. They are imported by three main companies who stand to make a lot of money in the transaction. Their claim though, is that it is done out of compas- sion for the working classes of Canada.

Now, if those ten million Can- adian working people did turn completely to the eating of elec- margarine. it is estimated that they would save some sixty mil- lion dollars a year. Six dollars apiece or about the cost of oric cigarette per day.

Ila Effect

These same people could save sixty million dollars or six dollars a year each in a dozen other ways if they would get together. By some improvements in our_mark- eting. buying. and distribution system, several millions could easily be saved to the working classes and. instead of having H had effect on our economy- ii would benefit both consumer and producer. Dairying is the basis of Canad- ian agriculture. If our butter in- dustry fails. so will the milk. the cheese. the livestock, the ‘S011 fer- tility. ancl eventually agriculture. especially in this province. The loss of the dairy industry would affect nearly all the food of the Canadian people.

Scientific Approach

There ls no way yet known to science to have healthy soil. heal- thy plants and animals (including man) without livestock. Commer- cial fertilizers will not take the place of natural fertilizers. So. the fruit, the vegetable, the milk, and the mea would gradually be lacking more and_ more health pmducing qualities. If the dairy industry is crippled, dairy farms are in serious. danger of becoming barren. ,
