Dr. Suzuki ended his address by returning to the opening comments about his trip to the 200 with his children. On their own initiative his daughters organized a parade in their community to help save wildlife.

Editorial Note: One of the points made by Dr. Suzuki during his talk was that all the profits from his books and records as well as most of the speakers fees goes into native and environmental issues. The books include his autobiography Metamorphdsis and his science series for young adults Looking at Plants, Looking at Insects, Looking at Senses, and Looking at the Body. Seven a‘H'end from REI.

Seven people from Prince Edward Island, including four members of the Natural History Society, attended the annual meeting of the Atlantic Environmental Network in Fredericton on April 16. The meeting drew 40 people from around Atlantic Canada and Maine.

The morning was devoted to business, and questions on the makeup of the AEN, its functions and future directions, while the afternoon was spent on the formation of a coalition to work towards sustainable fgrestry in this regio . While every province has different problems, all face a degraded wood resource, increased demand and overcutting.

It was noted that Prince Edward Island is in the best position to achieve sustainability adopt ecological principles since it does not have the immense industry lobby groups (N.S. & N.B.) or large amounts of crown land that is under lease in other provinces. 4

Mitch Lansky, who has written extensively on forestry issues in Rural Delivery & other publications, told of the situation in Maine, and was quite excited at the interest he found at the meeting. Several graduates from the UNB forestry school and the Maritime Forest Ranger School, as well as cutters, a contractor, woodlot owners, and even a representative from a pulp mill in northern New Brunswick.

The coalition will be looking at, among other issues, sustainable or ecological forestry projects; alternatives to pesticides;conservation; labour practices; government policies and practices; and appropriate harvesting practices. Six collection sites will be set up on June 4 for hazardous household wastes. This is an Environment Week project to help solve the problem of where to dispose of dangerous chemicals found in most households, and also to bring attention to the presence of these chemicals in our homes. O'Leary, Summerside and New Glasgow sites will be the local fire hall; Montague and Souris at the town hall; and Charlottetown at the provincial gov't parking lot by Victoria Park.
