Adam walked round by the rick-yard, at present empty of ricks, to the little wooden gate leading into the garden—once the well-tended kitchen-garden of a manor- house; now, but for the handsome brick wall with stone coping that ran along one side of it, a true farm-house garden, with hardy perennial flowers, unpruned fruit- trees, and kitchen vegetables growing together in careless, half-neglected abun- dance. In that leafy, flowery, bushy time, to look for anyone in this garden was like playing at ‘hide and. seek.’ There were the tall hollyhoeks beginning to fiower, and dazzle the eye with their pink, white, and yellow ; there were the syringas and gueldan roses, all large and disorderly for want of trimming; there were leafy walls of scarlet beans and late peas; there was a row of bushy filberts in one direction, and in another a huge apple-tree making a

barren circle under its low-spreading boughs. But what signified a barren patch ortwo!? The garden was so large. There

was always a superfluity of broad beans—it took nine or ten of Adam’s strides to get to the end of the uncut grass walk that ran by the side of them; and as for other vegetables, there was so much more room than was uecessary for them, that in the rotation of crops a large, flourishing bit of ground-sel was of yearly occurrence on one spot or other. The very rose-trees, at which Adam stopped to pluck one, looked as if they grew wild; they were all huddled together in bushy masses, now flaunting with wide open petals, almost all of them of the streaked pink and white kind, which doubtless dated from the union of the houses of York and Lancaster. Adam was wise enough to choose a compact Provence rose that peeped out half- smothered by its flaunting, scentless neigh- bors, and held it in his hand—he thought he should be more at ease holding some- thing in his hand—and he walked on to the end of the garden, where he remembered there was the largest row of currant trees, not far off from the great yew-tree labor. But he had not gone: many steps beyond the roses, when he heard the shaking of a bough, and a boy’s voice, saying

‘Now, then, Totty, hold out your pinny —there’s a duck.’

The voice came from the boughs of a tall tree, where Adam had no difficulty in dis- cerning a smal!, blue pinafored figure perch- ed in a commodious position where the fruit was thickest. Doubtless Totty was below, behind the screen of peas. Yes— with her bonnet hanging down her back, and her fat face, dreadfully smeared with red juice, turned up toward the cherry- tree, while she held her little round hole ot a mouth and her red-stained pinafore to re- ceive the promised down fall. Iam sorry to say, more thar. half the cherries that fell were hard and yellow instead of juicy and red; but Totty spent no time in useless re- grets, and she was already sucking the third juiciest when Adam said, ‘There,now, Totty you've got your cherries. Run in the house with ‘em to mother—she wants ‘you—she’s in the dairy. Run in this minute—there’s a good little girl.’

He lifted her up in his strong arms and) kissed her as he spoke, a ceremony which Totty regarded as a tiresome interruption to cherry-eating ; and when he set her down she trotted off quite silently toward the house, sucking her cherries as she went along.

‘Tommy, my lad, take care you're not shot foralittle thieving bird,’ said Adam, as he walked off toward the current-trees. —

He could see there was a large basket at the end of the row; Hetty would not be far off, and Adam already felt as if she were locking at him. Yet when he turned the corner she was standing with her back toward him, and stooping to gather the low-hanging fruit. Strange that she had not heard him coming! perhaps it was because she was making the ieaves rustle. She started when she became conscious that some one was near-——started so violently that she dropped the basin with the currants in it, and then when she saw that it was Adam, she turned from pale to deep red. That blush made his heart beat with a new happiness. Hetty had never blushed at seeing him before.

‘I frightened you,’ he said, with a deli- cious sense that it didn’t signify what he said, since Hetty seemed to feel as much as he did ; ‘let me pick the currants up.’

[Halifax Evening Mail.) A Talk About Life Insurance.

‘Few persons except those engaged in | the buziness realize the very large increase |iz the volume of insurance from year to year,’ Was remarked by the genera! agent @ of our life companies the other day. ‘Give me some statistics relative to this | Subject,’ replied a Herald reporter.

| ‘With pleasure; for it is a matter of great public interest. Do you know that the volume of life assurance carried to-day in Canada is equal to $26 on the life of every man, woman and child in the country | j And this proportion is being largely in- creased from year to year. This plan of | providing for the future is year ‘y year tak- ing a@ firmer hold on the minds of the the thoughtful and intelligent until by such it is regarded to-day in a sense as the family ‘sheet anchor.’ Why, there are men in this city carrying $20,000 to $60,000 life assur- ance, who even fifteen years ago would not discuss the subject. If you want a few statistics, and will “ollow me, here they are. We will take, sey for a period of fourteen years at in ervals of five, begin

"You see, therefore, the progress has dur- ing these years been most remarkable, the ainount in force having been raised from 2,000,000 in 1870, to $124,000 in 1883. Another fact ia revealed which ought to interest Canadians, i. e., in 1870 the pre- mium received by Canadian companies was only $203,972, while in 1883 it hed reached the very large amount of $1,652,543, or eight times as large; while during the same period the British companies have only just about held their own, and the Americans have only doubled theirs, in both cases with more than twice the num- ber of companies competing, some of whom are very pushing, and not always over- scrupulous as to the means they employ in procuring new business.’

* But, in addition to the class of com- panies you refer to, there are a number of ‘co-operative’ or ‘ assessment societies’ operating in Oanada. Do you find that these affect your business ?

‘Not to any appreciable extent. We know there are such societies in existence, but rarely meet them on their work. Tor my own part I have always left them alone. Most people of common sense know that the plan or scheme isa delusion. Still in all communities are to be found men ready to believe that by some ‘hocus pocus’ pro- cess, a ten dollar bill can be made to take the place of a hundred. They don’t quite understand it themselves, but their next door neighbors say ‘tis all right, and he derives his faith from some one else, and so the circle widens, and by and by the bubble burste,and then if they want to assure their lives, they go to some regular company and do it at a cost two or three times as large as it would have been had they gone there at first. Or perhaps their health has be- come impaired and they find they cannot get assurance on any terms. You cannot suspend the laws of mortality, and if a man wants life assurance he must pay for it, as for any other article he buys. In fire and marine business, if the assured is dissatished with the company, he may at the end of the term go elsewhere without loss. But in life assurance this cannot be done. It is most essential the: afore in buying a policy of life assurance, that one should get the best article to be had. This may not be of interest to you, still it is is of vital import- ance to the people of Canada, to see to it that what they hold is what it professes to be, viz., absolute security for those depen- dent, and not a rope of sand,’

‘But it is not urged by the promoters and agents of these societies, that the regular companies charge more than it is worth or necessary /’

‘We are quite accustomed to their cries, which are being continually repeated. But I am glad you have suggested it. Life as- surrance in the abstract is one of the simplest things in the world—nothing speculative at all about it. The two most important factors are average of life and ac- cumulative properties of money. We know, therefore exactly what is necessary to charge by way of premium—in order to perfect safety. And the competitien be- tween the different companies being so keen is sure tokeep its costs within the lowest limits. For it stands to reason that the company that can conduct its business at the smallest ratio of expense(the standard of lives being the same) will have the larg

est surplus to divide. And aftera while the public find this out and naturally gravitate where they can get the

most for theirmoney. Why, do you know, as you may see from the figures 1 have given you, that of the whole 39 companies doing business or holding business in Can- ada, more than a fourth of the whole is in the hands of one, and that last yerr that company conducted its business at a cost of 52c. per $100 of insurance on its books. This certainly don’t indicate waste in that direction. Then again, besides the very large amount paid yearly for death losses, now aggregating over $J 000,000 in Canada jalone, a considerable proportion of the premiums paid reverts back again to the policy holder in the shape of surplus or profits. Why, the profits declared and paid in cash by the company to which I have just referred (and which { need hardly say is a Canadian cffice) during the fifteen ‘years previous to 1880 were an evorege of 36 per cent. on all ordinary life premiums received.’

‘Is thie exceptional, or a fair average of
