Smattvox Racive.—Smalipox is still prevalent in Havaua. The death in the city last month, 180 ; for December, nearly 400. The deaths represent nearly 2,000 cases. During the recent epidemic in Santiago de Cuba over 1,200 persons died. Steamers stopping there arrived and sailed as usual, no precautions being taken.

A Lance Fryp.—One day last week, says an exchange, while J. L. Gertridge, of (ias- pereaux, aud a number of men were chopping in the woods up the Gaspereaux river, they came upon a beehive in the heart of a tree which contained about two hundred pounds of choice honey. Though it is not very unusual that hives are found in such places, this is said to be the largest ever discovered in that vicinity.

THE TERMS KEPT SECRET.

Wasuineron, Feb. 15.

After daily sessions for the last two weeks, the Fisheries Commissioners at 7 o'clock to-night completed their labors and signed a treaty, which, it is believed, will resuit ina satisfactory settlement of the disputes a century between this Government and Great Britain over the North Atlantic fisheries. The treaty was sigued by all six Commissioners, and is said to have their full concurrence. It will be sent to the President to-morrew for trans- mittal to the Senate. Before it can take effect it must have the ratification of «he Queen, Canada, Newfoundland and the Senate.

‘The treaty will not at present be made public. It can be stated that it relates ex- clusively to the disputes concerning the fisheries of the North Atlantic coast, and does not include any provisions concerning the Behring trouble, or commercial reci- procity. It does not contemplate the ad- mission of fish into the United States free of duty.

The Saco Bank Affair.

Saco, Me., Feb. 15.

The end of the Saco Bank robbery sen- sation was arrived at to-day. The institu- tion has received every dollar of the $265,- 000 worth of registered and negotiable bonds stolen by Frank MeNeally _ last August. ‘This morning the trustees drew up the following official statement: ‘‘A registerel package posted in Liverpool] February Srd was received at the Saco Post Office by the evening mail of the 14th inst. Upon being opened at the meeting of the trustees of the 15th it was found to contain 37 United States registered bonds of $5000 each, amounting to $185,000, to- gether with negotiable bonds amounting to $8,000 with all their coupons attached, which were stolen from the Saco and Biddeford Savings Institution in August last by Frank McNeally. The bonds were re- covered by his brother Harry. The return of the bonds is accompanied with no con- ditions whatever. Harry is unquestion- ably entitled to the reward offered.”

Severe Snowstorms. Lonpon, Feb. 15.

There are fearful snowstorms on the con- tinent. In some parts of Switzerland the snow is seven metres deep, and numerous avalanches have occurred attended by loss of life. The outlet of St. Gothard railroad tunnel was blocked by snow, and the train detained inside the tunnel foran hour. The channel of the river Ache, at Gaste, in Austria, was filled with snow by an aval- anche, which also destroyed several houses. Simiar accidents occurred in Kotteschach and Schwarza valley, in the Tyrol and else- where.

Big Fire.

Provivence, R. I., Feb 15.

A big fire is raging over several blocks situated in the heart of the city, involving a large number of brick buildings partially occupied by manufacturers, jewelers, sev- eral hotels, stables and carriage houses. It is impossible to estimate the losses, but if the flames are not stopped where they now are, it will probably be the costliest fire evar known in the city.

A fire in Fabre’s hardware establishment last night caused a total loss of $160,000 ; insurance $48,000.

Vice-President Vanhorn, of the Cana- dian Pacific Railway, says the reports about the wheat blockade in Manitoba are gross exaggerations, and in many cases down- right lies.

The Bank of Nova Scotia.

Hatrrax, N.S., Feb. 15.

At the annual meeeting of the Bank of Nova Scotia to-day, the reports were ad- opted. It wasshown that the net earnings of the Bank last year were 11 1-5 per cent. on the captital, and the rest account was now 36 percent. The annual statement of the Peoples Bank of Halifax shows a net profit of nearly $35,000.

A Farewell Demonstration.

The feeling in the city in favor of a fare- well demonstration in honor of the Gov- ernor-General is growing steadily. A pub- lic meeting will be held on the 21st to con- sider what shape it shall take.

Mr. Macleod’s reply to Yah Amerikanski on the scale of points is a remarkable piece of work, and the Monthly is fortunate in having so brilliant aman as Mr. Macleod. Iam glad that I can say something in commendation of such good work, and I have heard the same opinion regarding him expressed by a good many of my friends. My sincere wish is that he will continue to delight us from month to month with his interesting and able articles on the trotting-horse.”

The relatives and friends of Mr. Macleod in this Province will read the above with great pleasure. It is gratifying to note that Mr. Macleod’s talents are being appreciat- ed in the Great Republic.
