International Study and Travel

Welcome back! My name is Janice Ployer and once again I am working at Student Services as International/Exchange Student Advisor. It is my job to assist any International students attending U.P.E.I. along with promoting exchange and international programs.

We currently have four private university exchanges arranged with Muskingum College (Ohio), University of South Florida, Eastern New Mexico University and Dundee University (Scotland). Exchange students attend university at the host school while earning credit towards their U.P.E.I. degree. An exchange participant pays regular U.P.E.I. fees for five courses per semester and residence fees for a double room with a 20-meal food plan. So basically, the only extra fees to participate are transportation costs. To be eligible for an exchange, you must have at least a 70% average in five courses the semester before your intended exchange. Any U.P.E.I. scholarships, student loans or bursaries may be utilized to help cover the cost of an

exchange.

Something new to U.P.E.I. this year is a computer program called SOJOURNS. This is a menu-driven, user-friendly database system which allows the user to search for work and study abroad programs. For example, if you are interested in volunteering in South America, this program will search its directory for such opportunities and give you the information available. Sojourns offers information on: areas of work/study; region; country; financial details; eligibility requirements; duration/time periods; organization and support services. With over 2500 different opportunities, I’m sure that you will find what you are looking for. Sojourns will soon be available for your use. Keep an eye out for more information.

How does Australia grab you, Mate? Right now U.P.E.I. and Deakin University of Geelong, Australia (about 80km. south west of Melbourne) are in the process of setting up a contract for exchange. A year or a semester studying in Australia sounds pretty good to me. Again the only extra fee on top of our usual tuition and residence fees would be transportation.

Student Services has an excellent source of information concerning International programs. If you have any questions concerning these programs, feel free to drop in to Student Services for a visit. My hours are:

Mondays 2:00 - 3:00 Tuesday and Thursdays 11:30 - 2:30 Fridays 11:00 - 2:00
