Holmes the grit candidate was elected by a majority of 120

The vote in Goderich and Clinton, which was largely effected by Tarte’s prow mises to deepen Goderich barbor and build an air line to Toronto, was respon~ sible for the grit victory.

Inthe country districts the Conserva- tive candidate made great gains.

St. Joan, N B, Feb. 22.—In St. John today the sheriff declared Shaw,a Con- servative, elected over Reynolds.

lasting the road-bed of the railway. This tract of land congisted of a gravel bed about twenty acres in extent and about seven feet deep. The gravel consisted of hard grey, yellow aud white pebbles, of little more than ba!f an irch in diameter on the average, mixed up with yellow sandy clay. Again last autumn, when making a survey on Lot 12, [ travelled ' from Hilerslie Station along the South Junction Road to the Western Road. I! observed along the sides of the fielde piles | of grey stones,a!ll of moderate size, some about a foot io diamrier, most of them a great dealsmalier, whieh bad been picked » up off the firlds, They were more or less angular im shape, with the sharp edges somewhat worn off. Captain Richarde, of B.deford,informed me that he had formerly shipped hundreds of tons of these stones for ballast: On the ficlds themselves one could see thousands of smaller stones which were 100 smal! to pick up. There did not seem to be any elay or gravel mixedupwith them. The question is how did these foreign boulders, stones, gravel aud clay come there? The usual! answer is that they were brought there by ice. Thais ean be accepted asa general ans- wer, as we know of no other agency capabl: of briugiog large blocks of e.one a hundred miles or so from distant moun- tains where is now found the same kind of rock as that of which the boulders con- siet, toalevel country with no higher land immediately surrounding it and which is cut off from the mainland by the sea.

But were they brcught here by glac ers moving over the face of the earth,or by icebergs floating in the eea? I[ think by the even distribution of the boulders, stones, gravel and clay over the surface of the ground, and no appearance of any disturb: ance atter being depcsited,that they were depoeited by icebergs floating in deep water. Sothen I venture to conclude that our le)and was at this period at the bottom of the eea. ‘Then we want to know what was the probable depth of the sea at that time. This can ovly be guessed at, but it may be arrived at approximately by obser- vations made elsewhere. Last autumn I spent ten days in Halifax, and during that timel went frequently to the park,which ae many of you know issituated at the exirem= ity of the peninsula formed by Halifax Harbor avd Bedford Basin on the one side aod the North-West Arm on the other. One day when walkiag out there I noticed near the entrance situated next to Halifax Harbor a rounded rock about 5 feet above the levei of the sea and jutting out about 60 feet from the shore Limmediately walked out to it, and found, as I expected, that it was a rock over which aglacier hal travelied. The rock was comparatively bard and its strata was in- ciined at anacgle of about 3% degrees with the horizon, Its surface however was almost perfectly smooth, as if planed by a huge plane. I[n fact the rock looked hike the top of a polished globe. But on lookiag closely at this smooth surface numerous lines or groovescould be seen, all parallel or nearly so, and pointing in the geveral direction of Halifax Harbor, that ie, of the valley of which ibe harbour and Bedford Basin ure a part. Now these lines or grooves were caused by stones or boulders imbedded in the bottom of the glacier as ie known from observations made Ov existing glaciers. Continuing my walk tothe otber side of the park, about a mile away, on the northwest arm, {found another reck en the bank about 30 feet abeve the shore, smooth and polish- ed like the previous one, and with parallel lines and grooves on the suriace point- ing in the general direction of the valley of the Northweet Arm. A few days afterwards | made another exploration of the park and found on the very summit of the hill dividing the two valleys of Hali- fax Harbor andthe Notbwest Arm on the ridge of which tle citadel is built, and ata beight of about 200 feet above the level of the sea, another smooth rock with numerous lines aad grooves on ite surface all pointingin one director.
