Then resistance broke down and in Yurmouth, as in every other community in this part of the Do- minion the pure products of the House of Schwartz are now to be found on the shelves of almost every grocer

If the Indies are the course of many of our spices and if it was for them that Columbus and other explorers set out when they found America, then they were going far from home. In Spain and in Hun- gary grew the finest quality paprika, a famous and especially vivid spice. It is not hot and pungent. as many suspect from its similarity to cayenne pepper, but is siweet and may be used gen- erously. Incidentally, thoueh vitam- ins are not usually associated in the public mind with spices. Paprika contains both A and C vitamins, a fact which won the discoverer the Nobel Prize several years ago.

It is a policy which requires ag- gressive and modern merchandis- ing as a foundation. Many products of first quality have been produced in Nova scotia, but the producing plant and business have languish- ed because modern and persistent sales methods were not utilized. The horse and sleigh with which W. E. Sch/wartz travelled this prov- ince in the early days, sufficed for that time. So did the bicycle he izsed in the summer months —the first bicycle with pneumatic tires in this country, it is believed. Such an object of curiosity was it that teachers let school children out t0 see the marvel -a. man actually “riding on air.”

Peanut Butter Is High In Food Values

Peanuts. in one form or another. have probably answered more pro- blenu for the modern housewife constantly pesterecl with the situa- tion of providing a. changing and varied menu, than any, other article of food. And it will e found, ten times out of the ten, that the housewife did not err.

A food so rich in minerals and proteins as peanuts must be the right answer. chemists have found some glowing and enlightening facts concerning peanuts. For in- stance. Peanuts yield 38 6 per cent of fat as compared with stock's 20 4 per cent, and eggs 11.4 per cent.

A pound of peanuts is 25.6 per cent protein. while a. pound of por- terhouse steak is 21.9 per cent.

And calories! Eggs supply ‘I75 calories per pound, steak 1230 calor- ies per pound and peanuts, 2490 calories.

Peanuts, too, are much richer in calcium and phosphorous than either steak or eggs. ,

Peanut butter consisting solely of peanuts and salt, provdies all the peanut assets in a form easier to digest than the whole nuts. After considering some of these facts, it is not hard to realize why peanut butter is so much in demand. Nor is it hard to realize why the Sch- wartz brand leads the way.

Spices and coffee were the two first and most important. items brought from the world's markets to Halifax by the Schwartz firm one hundred years ago.

Then they came from the West Indies, of course, but in the ships of the old East India Company, as well, that huge imperial organiza- tion of which the Cunards were the Nova scotian agents. That was in the clays when the Indiamen held almost a monopoiy of eastern pro- ducts, especially of tea.

There is the story of Magellan, which everyone knows. He round- ed the world -the first man to achieve that feat. But the voyage was costly. Only one boat. and it would be a small one by today's measure of the frelghters which carry spices from the East. man- aged to survive the storms and un- charted reefs. But that vessel had a cargo of pepper and it was suffi- cienty valuable at that time to pay for the whole expedition. losses and
