Modern che- inistry has. however, furnished as with a solu- tion of the eni riua. it lms been found, that by subjecting carilionic acid gas to an immense pressure it becomes liquid, and this liquid on exposure to the atmosphere rapidly evaporates, but durin the process solidilics a part of the liquid,tl.is experiment is performed every day in the season to the visitors in the pantechnieon in London. ’l‘liis merely proves the fact that car- bonic acid gas may be solidified. Nature how- ever adopts a dilierent nieces. Carbonic acid I which is a compoun of oxygen and carbon is imbibed by the roots eoiuhined with water or in the gaseous state by the leaves and by seine elaboration of her own, unknown to us, .throwe oil’ the oxygen and leaves the carbon or ehnrcoal.
