Orientation 1977 seemed to lack a great deal of commitment, leadership and general interest. The number for events was much the same as other years and didn't exceed the two hundred mark. The Oomittee lacked enthusiasm from faculty/students to staff. Four students had been appointed by Student Union, and 1300 showed up Two faculty members were
- appointed and after the second meeting, one resigned. The other member, although keen to help, was very busy with teaching a summer course, and by late August, when help was needed, he needed and deserved a holiday. Unfortunately, instead of a holiday, he got very ill, and as a result, was unavailable for the entire week. The registrar appeared at very few meetings and seemed to have very little interest in Orientation activities. It appears that since it is a _ University committee, the position is represented because of the position and not because of an interest. The events were poorly attended by upper classmen. Many of them were tied up with Faculty/Student Advisory Programme on the first day, but still there were very few around cn Wednesday and 'Ihursday. Some of the committee members did not attend many of the events, and activities were left up to .too many individual people. There was a complete lack of interest in any follow-up and Student Services' members had to tie up many loose ends to maintain a good relationship for another year.
In View of the concerns the following recommendations are put forward:
1. Goals and objectives of the committee be defined.
2. Authority and the responsibilities of each position be defined
(job descriptions) .
3. Information on (a) goals and (b) job descrip- tions be distributed each year to all members.
4. Appointments to the committee be made to insure continuity. i.e. This year all students were seniors and both faculty member's terms were over.
