Tail and toe picking is most common a- mong baby chicks where there are too many chicks under one stove or in one pen and where the range is too restricted. Too high a temperature has also been found to be an important cause of cannibalism in chicks.

With laying hens we find over- crowding the most common cause and it appears that birds that have picked when they were chicks in the brooder house are quite likely to show the same cannibalis- tic tendencies when they are taken off the range and put into confine- ment in the laying houses.
