Dave Duggan had watched Annie's yig- itor with burning eyes. He followed the conversation with painful intentness, and *% sensa of speed which made him breath- less. He wished to join in it—kept moist- ening his lips and clearing his throat, but never found the courage to speak, His shynes3 probably prevented him from be- ing rude; for his fesling about Dick was rago, pure and simple.

*‘He’s a blamed dude,’ he thought to himself, again and again; but he could think of nothing to say which would con- vey this very opinion, and yet fit into the conversation. But when Dick had slunk back to his carriage Dave's feelings burst torth. Forafew moments, indeed, the little group (except Annie) talked, in their excitement, all together.

‘‘Ain’t he handsome!"’ Johnny sald, proudly; he was proud of anything con- nected with Annie.

‘‘He's real rich, Annie, ain’t he? Ridin’ in hacks?’ Mrs. Pugsley demanded.

‘‘He’s a blamed dude, that’s what he is,’’ Dave said flercely.

She shrank from him, a sort of horror in her face.

Never speak to me of such a thing—— Her face was stinging, her voice was broken, as a woman's might be to whom some insult- ing thing had been staid. ‘‘You will go, if you please,’’ she ended, her head high, and with a certain gesture that con- founded him.

** But look a here,’’ he insisted, follow- ing her as she move away from him; ‘‘Annie, look a here; that feller ain't a goin’ to marry anybody but a rich lady; his kind ain't goin’to marry yrou.”’

‘Well, I shan’t marry my kind, then! You can just understand that,’’ she criod, with a sudden, almost coarse fury. ‘*There’s no use for you to think of such athing. Don’t ever dare to speak to me that way again!"’

Thisisas faras Annie Graham has lived her story. She and Dave practically summed the matter up between them: ‘*His kind will not marry you,’’ and ‘‘J will not marry my kind.’’

The story is unfinished; one waits to see what will happen.

There are three things open to Annie: She may live out her life in South Bene, teaching, perhaps, in the public school,

gradually refining the terrible little house, rejoicing Johnny’s heart and never interfering, merely for her own

aesthetic necessities, with the unlovely habita of Johnny's fifty years of unlovely living: she may learn to accept his inti- matos as her acquaintances, his Mra. Puagsleys and Dave Duggans as household friends, starving all the while for the companionship of her equals. Or

She may shake off these intolerable sur- roundings which make her shrink as in- stinctively as an open eye shrinks from dust; she may turn her back on South Bend and the tenement houses and the painted snow-shovel and her father’s shirtslevves and her father's tender heart, and go out into the world to live her own strong, refined, intellectual life, perhaps as a teacher in her old college; marrying, after a while, sume one who bag never seen her father, and coming into the sow!- destroying possession of that skeleton in the American clouset—the vulgarity of the former generation. Or——

She may because of sheer misery in she struggle between the new and the old, and for the dreadful suffocating comfort of it, fall back into the pit whence she was digged and try to forget the upper air.

What is the child's duty? To live her own life, or to live some one else's life? Is she to accept success or failure, fulfil- ment or renunciation?

People differ as to what constitutes success; some go so far as to say that the highest fulfilment lies in renunciation; and certainly there was once a life that might have been called a failure because it ended upon a cross on Calvary.

I suppose it all depends ou how you look at it.

The proportion of the seexes inthe eastern end of the state, for instance, as well as the western, shows that Pennsylvania Js one of the few Commonwealths where the males outnumber the females by 74,648. A ONE-ARM SHOT.

Thomas Allen, of Monterey, Supports a Family of Seven by Muanting.

For twenty-eight years Thomas Allen, of Monterey, familiarly known as “‘ Allen the Hunter’ has been making a living for seven people with his left arm and a gun.

One day when he was only 15 years of age he was out hunting ducks on the Monterey lagoon. In some manner his gun caught in his clothing and was dis- charged, wounding him in his right arm near the shoulder,

He lay in the tules with his arm bleed- ing profusely until he was picked up by some men who chanced to pass and was taken to his home. Dr. Canfield, of Mon- terey, and Dr. Callahan, of San Fran- ciseo, both noted physicians in the early days of California, held a consultation. Owing tothe great loss of blood they pronounced the boy beyond the reach of medical aid. His mother, however, called in an old Indian herb doetor, and before the year was out the boy was fs well as ever, but minus his right arm.

Young Allen’s father was a famons marksman, and the hoy seemed to inherit a strong taste for hunting. When he was only 4 years old he would beg to go with his father to shoot the ‘‘little cats,’’ as he called the cottontail raSbits which in- fested Monterey in those days. When 5 years old his career as a hunter began, for his father took him outin a field adjoin- ing their home, placed the gun over a chair and let him shoot at one of the lit- tle cats. He killed it, and from that mo- ment he has always had a mania for hun ting all sorts of game.

When Mr. Allen was 15 and the acei- dent occurred that resulted in the loss of his right arm he thought that his hunt- ing days were over. As his fathor port |

died shortly before, part of the support of the family devolved upon him. At first he tried the gaming table, as it seemed his only resource,

‘In those days,’’ said he, in speaking } of the matter recently, ‘‘twenty-dollar | gold pie@es were more common than | nickels are to-day. But 1 didn’t like the ups and downs cf a gambler’s life and the associations, so I gave it up aad de- | termined to learn to shoot with iy left arm.’’

At first he was awkward in loading his gun, but in a year he became as expert in handling it as any of his two-armed com- panions. Hefound, moreover, that he was able to make from $125 to 81504 month.

‘*Those were the golden days,’’ said he, witha regretful smile. At present he / says, he makes $3 to$5 a day. very | morning he starts out in his hunting wagon, with his English pointer, Keno, and gets back to town in the evening loadei down with game

‘*The greatest sport,’’ said he, ‘‘is deer hunting. I have killed as many as nine- teen deer in one day, and I should think about 600 or 700 during my life asa! hunter.’’ |

Every day in the year, rain or shine, | with the exception of Sundays and cne month in the summer, he is abroad in the hills with his shot-gun and hunting outfit.

He often takos parties from Del Monte off on trips to the mountains. Frequently | there will be several women in the par- ties. He has observed that the Engiish girls can stand fatigue better than an | average American girl. He thinks the | difference-is due to the fact that the Eng- lish girls take hunting in earnest, as a sport, while with American girls it is | simply a fad,

Mr. Allen is a widower with three pretty jittle daughters. He supports bis mother, his three children and two broth- ers. They live in the first wooden house | —so it is claimed—ever erected in Cali- fornia. {ft was brought herein sections by his mother in 1840 from England.— San Francisco Examiner.
