He had found safety-in his surm- mer home-a hole under an old up- turned sod. When he thought to move on he discovered Mr. Black- snake near by. Now at long last he was on his way again. He. was very near the entrance to his undi- ground winter home. He had had his last adventure for this season, made his last ion; jump untl. spiing. or so he thought. And then he saw Black Pussy. the big black Cat. who lives at Famer Brown's house. Now Black Pusy ls quick. All Cats are quick. especially when hunting.

caught many Mice, but never one like this one. All the others had run; none had i . This one didn't run. Ho went sailing through the air above the grass almost an if he had wings. There was no knowing in which direction he would jump next.

Nimbleheels jumped this way. Nimbleheels jumped that way. Black Pussy ran and sprang this way. Black Pussy ran and sprang that way. Always he was just too late, but so close that he was sure that if he kept on he rould catch that provoking jumper. Never had he wanted to latch a, Mouse more than he did this one. Perhaps if he kept this one jumping with no time to rest between jumps he would become tired. unable to jump quickly enough. So Black Pussy dashed this way and sprang that way, always lust a little too late.

Nlmbleheels was no longer sleepy. He was wide awake. very wide awake. This was no time for sleepi- ness. Thnt first. lnng jump had taken him past his doorway and his second jump had taken him farther from it. Somehow Black Pussy seemed always between him and it. It was exciting. but it. was excitement hc was used to and i‘. didn't confuse hint. He knew just what he was doing every second. Jumping for Life is always excit- ing and Nimbleheels had jumper‘ for Life at least once almost. every dny since he had avnkened in the SDring. All summer long life had been one adventure after another. It is that way with all the sn-lail people of the Green Meadows and the Green Forest. Was this to nc hi5 lost’- adventurc before going to sleep. or was it to be his last adventure ever?

Once more he jumped right over Black Pussy, who jumped up ln the air too late tn touch him. He landed in the grass close to his doorway and in a. jiffy was safel; inside and down in his snug bed- room beyond thc_rench of Black PUSSY 0!‘ Jack Frost. His adventures were over until another year.
