We have been thrilled by the news of the experiences of our Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh as they visited various parts of the Commonwealth. The accounts of their travels broaden our ideas of the extent. and varied conditions of the other parts of the world- wide family to which we as a nation belong. some of the places where they have been welcomed have been not much more than names to many of us. but we have a clearer conception of their location and their relation- ship the one to the other. We have learned also something of the life and cirstoi-no of the various people in those parts of out far- reachlng Commonwealth of aa- tions. '

Our appreciation of the queenly and gracious character of Her Majesty, Elizabeth II. has been enhanced by the reports of her words and attitude during this tour. but. to those who have been in closer association with her there must have ooinn a new and truer conception of Qiieenshlp and a new attachment and loyalty to our Queen as the representative of the Commonwealth and as an outstand- ,ini: example of Christian woman- hood. This long and exacting tour ion the part of this young couple will do more for the unification of our nations than all the trade agreements or political regulations that our statesmen arc -able to conceive.

At the time. of writing Prime Minister St. Laurent is still in India. but so far, in every place visited, he has created a friendly attitude toward Canada and also towards other western nations as well. Mr. St. Laurent always impresses the average person, no matter what. his politics may be, as an honest, frank and sincere gentleman. and cannot be surpassed as vi true. representative of Canada. This has been exemplified by the reports that have reached the public while he is on this trip. We often hear of so-called "soul- corporations; the inference is that most large business and in- dustrlal concerns are interested only in piling up riches with no thought for the welfare of the public or of the many individuals who labor for them. In feudal days no doubt this lnfcrence'was justified in most; instances; there may be instances even now where powerful corporatolns do no more for the common welfare than they are compelled to do by civil law and the power of labour unions. Such instances. however. must. be very rare. There is plenty of evi- dence to show that the heads of many large concern: are deeply

interested in public education, health. culture, and well-being generally.

These men have come to realize that the strength and perman- ency of any particular industry in a. democratic society depend very considerably on the part: it plays in the econo lie and cultural well- being of the society as a whole. One very notable exposition of this belief is the Ford Foundation. one of the truly great instltirtions of modern times.

Behind this gift. and many others like it are the life and work and genius and humanliarianlsm - yes. and the dreams of ii common brother- hood - of the late Mr. Henry Ford, who some years before his death established the 500 million dollar trust. ,

During the years between then and now there is scarcely .a seiz- ment of American society which hu not profmed one way or an- othevr by the funds at the Foun- dation's disposal. The Educational Fund itself, as I. separate endow- ment. dates from Arvrll 1951. and already upwards of 00 million dol- lars have been allocated to it. These funds are not used for traditional purposes such as col- lege endowments, building pro- grams. and operating expenses. According to the present Presl- the Educational Fund. "its purpose has been to devote its attention to eduoatolri problem.-. on all levels and to authorize basic studies concerning contem- porary goals in educational pro- cedures. and to encourage experi- mentation for which no ma- chinery or funds are available at present."
