HORRIBLE Arm” AND Loss or Lina.— By the passengers and officers of the steamboat Otter, We have the following particulars of a serious aflray, which occurred in Bellview, I. T. two miles below Galena, on Wednesdaylast, the lat of April. The ‘circumstances are thus stated :

It has long been known that there was .a party of desperadoes, horse thieves, counterfeit- ers, &c., in that quarter. A man by the name of W. W. Brown kept a tavern in Bellview, and was believed to be the head of the gang, this house forming the halfway house in their passage up and down the river. When a horse was stolen, it was brought to Brown’s and sold to him, generally in the presence of some of the gang, who would swear to the purchase, and immediately run off. Some horses had been lately stolen, and were traced to his possession, which, upon demand, he refused to give up, or account for. A warrant was taken out for him, and placed in the hands ofthe Sheriff. On the lst, Sherifl' A. Warner attempted to arrest Brown, but he having fortified his house, and having a party ofsome twenty or thirty men with him, refused to be taken.—The Sheriff there- upon summoned a posse of citizens to attack the house. '

Upon the approach of the Sherifl"s party, the party in the house fired upon them, killing one man. The Sheriff‘s party returned the fire, and several fires ensued, in the course ofwhich, the following persons were killed or wounded.

Ofthe thieves, W. W. Brown and Thomas Far- ley, both killed. An old man named Butty, a man by the name of Welsh, and several others, severe- ly wounded; some others were slightly wound- ed. A young man in the boat says, that a man named Filler, and another of Brown’s party, died before the Otter left, but it is not so stated in the list furnished by the Clerk.

0fthe Sheriff’s party, there were killed, Mr. H. Palmer, Mr. Maxwell, and Mr. Vaughan. Mr. E. Day and Mr. John Brinder were mor- tally wounded, and the latter was reported to be dead before the briat left, having been shot through the body. Mr. Welsh, Col. Collins, Mr. Beaty, Gen. J. G. M‘Donald, and several others, were slightly wounded.

Five or six fires passed between the assailants

and Brown's party. Those defending the house had the doors fastened, and defended it from the windows and other apertures, chiefly from the upper story; each man having a table before him, on which he had four or five loaded rifles. After the lapse ofa few minutes, the assailants forced open the doors and succeeded in capturing {number of men in the house. f When the Otter left. they had in custody 8 or 10 prisoners, whom they intended to try and punish by Lynch law that evening. The fol- lowing were arrested z—Trask, Fax, Coy, Stower, and Thos. Welsh. Between 2 and 3000 of the citizens of the surrounding country had collected on the ground,nearly all armed and very much excited.

Thomas Farley, noticed in the above as one of those killed in Brown’s house, is supposed not to have been of his party, but to be a travel- ler, who, in company with two or three others, had stopped at the tavern, and were in the house at the time of the assault.

Brown was of a very desperate character, and his family are all represented of the same stamp. Mrs. Brown, his wife, herself fired several times from a back window; Five or six of Brown’s party fled, and had not been taken.

The arrangements on both sides had been pending several days, and several propositions had been made by the citizens to Brown to leave the town, which he refused, when the citizens combined for the purpose oftaking him, and in this way both parties had been enabled to assem- ble in tolerable strong numbers.

Mr. H. Palmer, who was killed, left a family of six or seven small children. The scene inside of Brown’s house, where the dead and wounded men were yet lying on the floor, and the exaspe- rated crowd walking about amongst them, the floor covered with blood, is represented as being truly appalling. The opinion prevailed that some of the prisoners would be executed, and that if any were let ofl'they would be forced to leave the country.

On the thh of March, a body of 651ndians arrived at St. Antonio, bringing Miss Lockhart, a little girl, taken by them ayear and a-half since from the Guadaloupe, for the purpose of holding a council with the council ofour govern- ment. They said they wished to see if they could get a high price for her, and if so, they would bring all the other prisoners. one at a . time. Miss Lockhart stated that she had seen all the other prisoners at their camp a few days before she left. Col. W. G. Cooke, acting Secretary of War, being present, thought it pro- per to take hostages for the safe return ofthe prisoners, and Col. Fisher was ordered to march tWo companies and place them in the immediate vicinity ofthe council room. After some parley- ing. in relation to the prisoners, one company was ordered to march into the room, and the other to the rear of the building, where the warriors Were assembled. The chiefs were then told that they were prisoners, and would not be liberated until they restored their white prison- ers. One sprang to the back door and attempted to pass the sentinel, who presented his musket, when the Indian drew his knife and stabbed him. A general rush was then made for the doors. Captain Howard caught one by the col- lar and received aseverestab. He then ordered the sentinel to shoot theAIndian, which we

In the mean tiyme, Capt. Reed’s company "3' attacked by the warriors in the rear of Ill"! I“ v who fought with desperation. The Indians were driven into the stone houses, from which they kept a galling fire, with their bows and rides. When their arrows struck, it waswith such force that it penetrated to the feathers—A. small number succeeded invvgaining the oppositeside of the river, but Col. , clls pursued themyvuh a. party of mounted men, and killed all, With the exception of one renegade MeXican.

A single warrior took refuge in_a stone house, refusing every offer of life sent him; through the squaws, and after killing andwoundiug several of our men, the building was fired at night, and he was shot as he passed the door. _

The whole number of warriors, exceptingthe Mexicans, amounting to 35, were killed, besides two women and three children. our loss was 7 killed, viz: Lieut. W. M. Dunnington; privates, Kamrniskijand Whitney; Judge Thom- son, of Houston; Judge Blood,of Bexar; Mr. Cayce, of Malagoda, and a Mexican. '

Wounded—Capt. G. T. Howard, lst_Infantry, Capt. Matthew Caldwell, 1st Infantry, Lieu‘t. E. A. Thomson, private Kelly, company .1; Judge Robertson, Mr. HigginbothsnniMr. Mor- gan, and Mr. Carson. Total wounded, eight; Howard, Thomson, and Kelly, very severely.

At the request of the prisoner,.s squavv was liberated and well mounted, to goto the main tribe, and request an exchange ofprisoners; she promised to return in 4 days with our captive friends, and Cols. Cooke and M'Leod will wait until their return.

Col. Mayerick has brought information to Houston, that on the advance of the Centralists, under Arista, towards Guerreo, where the pro- visional Government of the new Republic of Rio Grande was established, the members of the Government appointed the lake of Espontoso, on the Neuces river, as the temporary seat of Government of the new Republic. A company of their troops is now said to be on its way to take possession of the spot.

“ WHEREAS a large amount of private tes, issued by ersons in New Brunswick, and payable in Halifax, Nova Scotie, are now in circulation in this Island, and are transferable by deliveryonly ; and whereas the issue of such Notes is not authorised by any law of this or any other ofthe British Provinces, or ofthe Imperial Parlia~ inent, nor is an security provided for the redemption thereof, but the Circulation or passing thereof within the

said Province of New Brunswick has been rohibitcd, under a penalty of Five Pounds for each 0 once, b a Law passed for that purpose ;-and whereas a Bill, being a transcript of the New Brunswick Act referred to, was unanimously passed by this House, during the present Session, to prevent the further circulation ofsuch Notes, afier the First day of October next, which Bill has been rejected by the Legislative Council ; and. whereas the most serious consequences may hare-flot- be falv by tho inhabitants of this Colony, if the circulation ofthe said Notes is not restricted : Therefore, Resolved, unanimous- 11, That this House pledges itself to take the sub‘ect again into its most serious consideration It its next ‘es- aion.” ‘ "

And whereas the House have this Session passed a si- milar Bill,_whicli has been ne atived by the Council; Therefore, Ordered, that the lgtiregoing. Resolution be thrice published in the Royal Gazette and Colonial Her- ald, Newspapers, that the ublic may be sufficiently ap- prised ofthe intention of tliis House, and of the risk of receiving such irresponsible paper as a sufficient enduring consideration for their goods and property. ‘
