Lord Durham, in his frst report on British North America, said; ‘‘Ir these important and extensive colonies should speak with one voice, if it were felt that every error of our colonial policy must cause a common suffering and a common discontent throughout the whole wide extent of British America, these complaints would never be provoked.” Events have completely verified the pre- diction. Since 1867 that extensive and important group of colonies have spoken With one voice, the voice of the Dominion of Canada, and Great Britain has ruled that as regards foreign relations where the interests of England and Canada are iden- tical, the two countries are one, and en- titled to equal consideration.

Dominion Day is Canada’s Fourth of July, althw.zh the causes for celebraticn are diametr.cally different—the one coantry celebrating the unity and the other the dismemberment of the British Empire on this continent. Iu every city, town and hamlet in the broad Dominion the Union Jack was unfurled, and strong, self-re- liant young Canada on the anniversary exulted in her possession of untrammeled institutions, free government and a healthy, happy people. Problems, no doubt, have yet to be faced. The strain of world wide competition, the high tariff pressure, the demand for markets, the need for more sturdy workers in the couu- try’s development—are some of the diffi- culties which confront the Dominion; but Cauada is well able to grapple with them now, for she has established for herself a name amoug nations for enterprise and the possession of the other natiouel virtues which goto make up a er and piosperous nationality.—Buffalo Express.

The Globe has already mentioned the excellent work done by the telegraph com- panies in ge:ting the returns of last ‘ues- day's elections The following note in regard to the matter, received by Mr. Easson, manager of the press department of the G. N. W. Telegraph C , | 2. however, interesting as showing the utility of the bicycle in gathering euch returns The note is from the St. Thomas agent of the G. N. W. Company. He writes: ‘‘In collecting the returns of East and West Elgin this time we beat all previous re- cords by over two hours, having West Elgin complete yy Tp. m., and East Elgin atS p.m. In order todo this and avoid the previous long delay in gathering, at points within a radius of from threw to nine miles of St. Thomas to points where we had no office, I employed six bicyclists, who were out and started from each point for St. Thomas directly after the ballots were counted. Of course all this service costs someth:ng, but the promptitude with which the returns were received justified the expense.” — Toronto Globe.
