Recollections of a Private Secretary

the London ‘Free ‘Press. The first was the famous _Blddulph murder, of February 4th, 1880. The section of Blddulph In which It occurred was u transplantation from Tip- perary, and ll long-standing feud between the Donnelly family sud their neighbors was brought to a -bloody ending fl\"ll6 hands of a grou-p or lynchers. Five men and women were shot down, or butch- eredpand the old log homestead on the Roman Line ws's burned. Two trials failed to bring about the con- viction of the accused. Such law- lessness is rare In Canada. The other melancholy event was the sinking of the pleasure steamer "Vlctolia" In the ‘Thames river on 24th May, 1881, when 197 souls lost. their lives. I was tearing up sheet utter sheet. In an effort to start my story on that fateful night. when Malcolm Iiremner suld. "Boy, don't do that. Within my lifetime the electric lamp, the telephone. the phono- grnph and the electric trolley had‘ their birth. iln the retrospect, It must. seem surprising with what ease and readiness human society appropriated these inventions. It was so when the automobile came along. We must. however, not lose eight of the typewriter, the first varieties of which -I very well re- member. The csligra-ph was put on the market in the late seventies. and about that time I was doing considerable work as s court steno- grapher. It was a poor machine, ill comparison with the lnodern type- writer; but It was nevertheless a God send.
