Dunning May Seek Seat In

That Mr. J, J. Larabcc, M.P.-elect for Queen's County, will shortly vacate hie seat in favour of Hon. Charles Dunning, Finance Minister in the King Government, is the interpretation placed on a prediction, made at a Board of Trade meeting last night by his colleague Mr. Peter Sinc- lair, M.P.-elect, who stated: “Corning events cast their shadows before, and it may be my pleasure to have an influential member of the Government as my colleague.”

, Mr. Larsbee, who was in the city last night but did not attend the Trade Board meeting, said he had no defin- ite information on the subject, and could not discuss the nature of certain negotiations which were under way,

It had been reported from Ottawa yesterday that negotiations had been in progress with Mr. A. E. MacLean for a similar purpose, but evidently the arrangement could riot be effected. . I .

On Tuesday evening The Guardian interviewed Mr. Sinclair with regard to the MacLean rumor and was in- formed there was no likelihood of‘ any Island seat being vacated to provide a constituency for Mr. Dunning.

Mr, Sinclair’s reference to the matter last evening. however, is construed as implying that he has since re- celved information to the contrary, and that the seat to be vacated is that of his colleague, Mr. Larabee, and not Mr.

McLean’s.

Federal Parliament Likely To Assemble January 30

A move is under way to find a seat for Mr. Dunning in Prince Ed- ward Island and in this connection A. E. Macilean, member-elect for Prince, was called to Ottawa yester- day. He had two interviews with the Prime Minister but it was learn- ed today no decision had been reached.

Work is going forward with the new allocation of grants in aid to the provinces for relief costs, with several provincial ministers here conferring with finance and depart- ment of labor officials.

ROME. Dee. i'l-(C. P.-Hsvss)-— A war offlce communique today for the first time announced that an Ethiopian force of 3.000 men had compelled Italian troops to retreat and indicated that an Italian coi- umn was caught in northwestern Ethiopia between two attacking en- emy detachments. -

The Ethiopians apparently were attempting a flanking movement designed to cut Italian communica- tion lines between Enitrea and th front line near Maksls. i

The Italians retreated from Mai Tinchet on the Takkaze River to Dembaguina pass, leaving four‘ It- tlisn ofiioers. nine Italian soldiers and a number oi native troops dead. Enemy losses were not known exactly. but were described as "con- siderable."

Still Fighting

The engagement at Dembaguina Pass still was under way tonight but no further word was received ‘to indicate which side was prevail- ng. ‘

Mai Timchet is as miles west and slightly north of Malrale and 40 miles southwest of Al-rsum. Ethio- pia's coptic christian Holv City now in Ital‘an hands. Dembauwina Pass is 10 miles north of Mai Tim- chet between two of the great im- passable gorva which border the Tiikkare on the north.

GENEVA, Dec. l7—Geneva awaits anxiously the meet- ing of the League of Nations Council tomorrow at which the fate of the Franco-British peace plan may be decided.

In the morning the Council will consider a settlement between Iraq and the Assyrian people, in the afternoon the Italo-Ethiopian dispute, Thus in one hall the peace flotsam of one war will overlap consideration of another.

Primarily the Council will discuss the Franco-British peace plan. But to the representatives of the small nations especially the issue goes far deeper. To them the events of the next few days may well determine the fate of the League itself and whether it can in future be relied upon as check against aggression.

For no one really believes that if the present League effort fall! and sanctions lapse it will ever be possible again in secure the same virtual unanimity. The tendency rather, it is thought, will be to Whittle down the obligations under the Covenant. ~
