The Patriot’s Excuses Since the return of the Local Premier, the Patriot: has plucked up courage to at- tempt a defence, or, more properly, an ex- euse for the acts of the Davies-Stewart com- bination. We must confess to surprise at the course adopted by the Patriot. A few weeks ago it stated explicitly that the ex- traordinary and oppressive increase In the taxation of the Province was not due to the Owen Government. Now it is doing its best (or worst) to prove that the in- sed burdens of the people are due to the ma Government. What will Messrs. feo, John Lefurgy, G. W. DeBlois, Gordon, Samuel Prowse—and other ‘members, or staunch supporters, think or say’when they readin the Patriot—the horn of which they are now exalting—that the public expenditure under Mr. Owen, was hundreds of thousands of dollars more than the amount of the estimates of Mr, Davies! And what will, they think when, instead of a fairy and clear explanation of the figures adduced, they see that the ex- ity and muddled so 1, They cannot but think that their new-found: friends are the very reverse of friendly or ingenuous.

The Patriot makesit appear. that inexpend- ing $283,000 for the current year,Mr. Davies is expending less than during any year since the Island en*ered Confederation. It does not state that the ordinary expenditure du- ring the last year Mr. Owen wae in power, 980.73. The amount acttlally ex- y the Davies-Stewart combination is, of course, unknown.

The Patriot, however, admits one or two ext in amounts, by © which the pub diture under Mr. Owen was.

swelled. it admits, in a general way, that out of the $268,119.68 in the Treasury when we entered Confederation, Mr. Owen paid something on account of the Railway. It does not show, aa it might have done, that

the Province of one per cent. on the amount so expended. These instances of the unfair- ness of the Patriot to the members of the Jate Government, who now patronizes it, might be multiplied almost indefinitely.

Yet, after all, it does not offer a single valid excuse, for the bungling legislation and foolish acts which resulted in the fer- ment which now prevades the Province,

and we know. of no more suitable way of doing so than by the appointment of ad- ditional policemen.

A Valuable Cure for Diptheria.

Put a teaspoonful of flour of brimstone into a wineglass of water. Asit is hard to mix, stir it with the finger instead of a spoon, till it is well mixed, and then use it as a gargle. Do not spit it out, but swallow it, or what is bet ter, mix some fresh,to’ swallow without using as a gargle; that is, beside what is used to gargle with. When the disease is too bad to allow of gargling, blow: the flour of brimstone into the throat, through a quill, and. after the fungus has shrunk enough to allow it, use the gargle. Ifa patient cannot gargle, take a live coal, put it’on a shovel and sprinkle, a spoon- ful or two of the flour of brimstone at a time upon it. Let the patient inhale it, holding the head o: er it, and the fungus will die. If plen- tifully used, the whole room may’ be-filled: al- most to suffocation ; the patient -can’ hale it with doors and windows closed. Doctor Field used this cure, in England, most successfully. The mode‘of‘funiigating a room with sulphur is recommended in cases of consumption and of asthma. If any one receives benefit from this’ cure for diptheria, they will please communi- cate it to us, and by so doing oblige the person who senda the cure to us to print. o

His bro- ther, hoping to save him, gave up a thous- and Turkish pounds, but had to flee ‘to. save his own life. The stores and houses of Israelites and Mussulmans were sacked. Four Israelites were beaten and one assass- inated ; seventeen Israelites were dragged from: their refuge in the synagogue and murdered, and then the Israelites, number- ing 860 men, women and children, were driven along by the Russians and Bulgar- ians to Shipka, where for 15, days they lived on bread and water ; thence they were sent to Gobrova, and the Bulgarians ab- ducted and outraged fonr young girls and a married woman. Taken to Tirnova they were.relieved by their co-religionists and allowed to depart to Sistova and Bucharest. They reached Bucharest from Kazanlik after 60 days’ suffering and abuse, their numbers reduced to 326; All these fami- lies were in easy circumstances, but are now in abjeet. peverty. '. Their losses were a hundred thousand Turkish pounds.

Tue Presbyterians intend holding a tea and Bazaar in Ludlow Halls on Christmas Day. They will make arrangements with the Railway authorities for reduced fares all along the line on that occasion.

Tue Reform Club members gave’ a- free entertainment in Ludlow Hall on Friday evening. The Hall was crowded, .and the audience showed their appreciation of those who took part in it. The entertainment consisted of ‘songs, speeches, and recitations. During the evening quite a number signed the pledge. A Lecture is spoken off for next Friday night.
